Have had a whine in the rear end for almost 4K miles of the 6K on it.
Dropped it off at dealer for diagnosis..it does it on both acceleration AND deceleration at 62-70 ish.. My thought a bearing.
After 4 days at dealer, diagnosis.. Normal.. " Its a heavy duty thing"

Good Grief..

Like I said Expected after reading on here. said the tech drove another one new and it did it so it's normal..

My thoughts, at what point do you even NEED to drive another vehicle to see if a gear whine in the rear end is normal..
Gear whine-rear end, NOT NORMAL, end of story. No need to drive anything else.

Service manager is very polite, and at this point I am too.. and will continue to be.

It's actually a blessing because my Camper is in for service at the same time and if they did do something to the rear end, I would have had to go through all the break in procedures again before towing camper home after service.

I will wait a few weeks and schedule a ride along with a technician in a NEW truck and then compare to mine..

Its still kinda light at this point, but a trained ear knows it's there.

I'l compare this to my little commuter work car, a 2009 Nissan Altima that has about 165K on it. I took it to the dealer 2 weeks ago for a problem with the intelligent key system. Turns out that the part the was failing (steering lock controller) had an extended warranty on it until January 2016 because of potential problems on it for 09 Altimas..the dealership replaced the part and got me on my way and covered it under that extended warranty, even though it had expired 1.5 years ago. Hell Is ANYTHING warranty on a car with 165k miles on it..Outstanding service. I bought it at that dealer with 50K on it, and it had only been in twice for non routine service (this being the second time, the first was a break switch)

Just curious, but what gear ratio does your 6.4 have?

If your truck moves and isn't on fire everything is just fine according to Ram.

I'm convinced a large part of service manager training is making up over-technical confusing BS stories and giving the all too common, "they all do that" explanation.

Hi ronheater70,

Please keep us in the loop when you schedule the ride-along. We'd be happy to reach out to the dealership on your behalf while the truck is in service.

Thank you RAMCARES. nice to have a little bit of backup in this. WHat exactly do you communicate to the dealership, are you actually with Ram?

I'm good right now, manager/ service folk, very polite as am I. But it will escalate if it does not get taken seriously in the near term. Thank you!

These stories are becoming more and more too common.

THAT is sad.

yes, had a 76 pontiac ventura my grandmother gave me when i was a teen.
Rear end whined for about 7K miles on it before exploding. When all 6 kids were living at home we had a 2001 Chevy Express Van full size that developed a whine in it at about 75K miles on it.. since it was out of warranty, of course I was told how potentially dangerous it could be to not adress, and I paid to have it taken care of, but here,, No, Normal.

My questions to them will be
1. If its normal, why didnt it do it when it was new
2. Why did the used one I test drove with 14K miles on it not do it?
3. why did other manufactures consider it actually dangerous?
4. What exactly is making the noise, specifically if it is normal?

You know this is aggravating, But I keep things in perspective.. Im a glass half full type of guy. The fact I have two vehicles in the driveway, food on the table and a roof over the families heads puts us ahead of 2/3 of the worlds population.. it's all first world problems in my mind.. But STILL aggravating.

Rear end whine is not normal, I would try a different dealer.

I have a different dealer nearby I will try after I do a ride along with this tech in the near future.. I figure the more ammunition I have , the better! AT any Point im gonna wait until my camper comes home so I dont have to worry about immediate break in in the event something DOES get changed.

We're part of the FCA Customer Care organization. We can escalate your concerns if we need to have a case opened and have a specialist work through the repair process with you/the dealership, or we can just reach out and talk to the service team if it doesn't need to be case managed.

Probably more than 2/3, brother.

Your situation pretty much makes you ahead of 99% of the world - there's some *serious* misery out there.

Its good to see some perspective from you and the OP. We certainly have problems that the overwhelming majority of all humans that have ever lived would LOVE to have. Its frustrating for sure, we spend a lot of money on these vehicles and have high expectations for them and should be able to have them work correctly... but its great to see these as champagne problems!

Hope you get it worked out!

UPDATE:

Picked up the truck, asked the service advisor to let me speak with the manager, and immediately told her it's all good and i'm not there to yell or aggravate anyone..just said I wanted to discuss the findings.

My stepdad did that service manager thing for a long time at ford dealership, I know how rude and irate some folks can be, so I simply told him that I appreciated them looking into my concerns, But I don't agree with the findings. He stated he desired me to be happy with my truck, and after giving him some examples of why I felt it was an issue and comparing experiences we agreed to get together sometime in the near future and do a ride along with my truck and a new one with a technician and compare notes.. SO.. I'm still a little sad I have to attempt out a second time, but it's all good. I at least felt he took my concern seriously and he wants me to enjoy my truck.. SO we will see where it goes.. Im thinking two weeks out Ill try again.

When you go from drive to reverse or vice vera...do feel a clunk like there is any play? I'm assuming that gear lash is set my hand, so there is a possibility that it could be incorrect and something like a pinion nut has to be torqued so much, i'm assuming it is done by a machine in the factory.
