What is your view on the new auto park feature on the newer 2017 dodge ram 1500 tradesman if the door is open. was never informed about it from dealer. took me by surprise when i was backing up and open the door. had the truck for three days

I did not realize the feature was on the truck with 8 speed auto trans, my last dodge ram don't have this feature (2008 ram 1500) I came about as a safety feature after a Jeep was said to come out of bark rolling backwards pinning a person

WOW!!! I'm glad you posted this. I have had my truck for 8 months and never knew it would do that. Thanks!

Mine is a 2017 bought in December. Mine does not do that. I’ve moved multiple times with the door open
Edit: it usually just screams at me to put the truck back in park because the door is open

My 07 would honk the horn if the door was open in reverse, would drive me nuts while hooking up farm equipment to tow.... I say remove the safety BS and let things sort themselves out

wow good to know, even though I know for a fact my 2011 will move in reverse with the door open no problem, I've done this many a time when hooking up horse trailers.

My 2017 Ram 1500 Big Horn allows me to. It will say "Vehicle Not In Park" but will allow me to roll.

My '17 Sport doesn't do that. I've gone forward and back numerous times with the driver door open. Never paid attention to the dash though to see if there's a message. I was busy maneuvering. Wonder if it's part of some options package? Or if the unlocked PCM, which I've always suspected was for an earlier year, just doesn't have it. Can't recall ever trying it with the OEM PCM. But it would definitely irritate me if it did.

wink

I believe its one of the newer software updates. My wife's 2014 Grand Cherokee now does it after the last update, Chrysler's answer to being sued over people who don't know how to put vehicles in "Park" before they get out of them.

Granted, the 2014-2015 Grand Cherokee shifter is a little different than the traditional, it always returns to center after pushing forward or pulling back into/out of gears. However, if it doesn't say "P" on your display, don't get out (or expect the truck to still be mobile when you do). But nope, we need more nanny systems.

Just my two cents.

My 2017 Big Horn 1500 CC will not allow me to back up or go forward when the driver door is open unless the driver's seat belt is buckled.

Unbuckled, it won't go anywhere, forward or reverse. The gear selector light blinks and forces you to go back to park, close the door and shift back into the desired gear.

Tomorrow I'm going to get a friend to try the other doors.

Anyone with a Mopar Tech Authority account?

When I had access, IIRC one of the TSB/RRT/bulletins for our trucks was a transmission update that added the auto park feature (although it wasnt called auto park).

I wonder if it is a s/w update that was missed before the truck was sold? The pre-delivery-checklist specifically states to bring all modules up to latest s/w, but perhaps not all dealers actually abide by the list?

Im not sure there is a way to figure out what s/w level you have in the TCM, ECU, etc., at least not without specialized tools. Would be interesting to know just how many trucks out there arent up to date because of dealers lack of attention.

My wife's 2014 Grand Cherokee has this feature after the recall was performed. It only shifts to park if the seat belt is unbuckled. I figured this out after taking her car to the carwash where the car needs to be in "N" without someone inside.

My 18 1500 doesn’t care if door is open, forward or reverse... it will roll , I can even roll the shifter from reverse to drive with out the break depresed when slowly maneuvering in my driveway. Seatbelt being buckled or unbuckled has no effect on this either.

my mothers Bmw X3 wont let you go into gear if the driver door is open, it will ding at you.
I havent tried to see if my truck does it or not yet. These modern cars have too much Big brother safety crap in them.
