Well Gents ... i am told that a "Star Report" was submitted. Apparently a FCA factory tech is going to look at it on Tuesday. We shall see. I am praying that this can be resolved soon.

I too believe it is in one of the universal joints on the steering column assembly. I have been told that they have checked them and found no issue. I'm no ASE mechanic so I don't know. I did work on Hueys and Cobras so I am very mechanically inclined. BUT ... we will wait this out and see what they find.

The two individual columns meet at a U joint. Place your thumb and index finger and pinch the joint. Lightly pinching the joint and wobbling you will hear chatter if your Grab the joint you put two much pressure so you don't hear it. That's how I found the noise. My friend is a Ferrari mechanic he figured it out for me. I will try and post a video. Also place a gob of bearing grease on the joint doe the noise go away? Compare the play to a new 1500 in a lot on a Sunday. That's what we did this morning.

Grab it from the top of the engine compartment.

Is it a clunk or ticking?

maybe like this...
[yt]SFsuQCnmVh4[/yt]

if it is, dealer did a brake service (pads removed, calipers cleaned up, added high temp adhesive type grease to keep the calipers in place)
sound was gone after that.

Yes I sure will. I'm having problems with the dealership it's at right now. I made an appointment to drop the truck off to get the broken manifold bolts fixed and the clunking fixed. My appointment was Monday 7/31. It's now 8/6 and they havnt even touched my truck. They said it won't be done until NEXT Thursday or Friday. Which is totally unacceptable. The mechanic "assigned" to my truck is "backed up" rebuilding an engine and has other cars to do before mine. I don't understand why another mechanic hasn't been put on my truck.

I just contacted Ram Cares to see what they can do. My warranty only covers 5 days of rental. If my truck is done Thursday I will owe $370+ for the rental and if it's done Friday I'll owe $415+.

I'm so mad right now.

Andrea ... I could most certainly use some help here. It has been over 2.5 weeks and the dealership tech cannot fix the issue. They hear it and know there is a problem but this issue has completely STUMPED them.
Thanks,
Drew Brown

Alright Jungle Friends ... I received a call from the dealership today and my truck is finally fixed. This is what I am told it was ... they loosened and tightened the bolts to factory spec, these bolts fasten the bracket that attaches the steering column to the body of the truck. I believe there are 5 of them, maybe?

I pick the truck up tomorrow. I can confirm at that time if the noise is definitely gone away.

Same issue here. Not the tie rods I replaced all of them today.
Several other videos on you tube about the issue. Here is a link to my truck popping from steering shaft. Let's us know what dealer replaces to solve? I even tried soaking the shaft with lube no luck. The second link is someone else with same issue.

This is the part I believe is causing the issue. It's called he intermediate shaft (upper and lower) you can see it right below the master cylinder. Two parts not sure which on is causing the issue.

Let's us know what is replaced on your truck?

Alright guys the dealer called and it turns out a gear inside my power steering pump exploded/shattered. The part is on "backorder" so I have to bring my truck back to get it repaired once they get the part in.

So my clunking/clicking was I guess the power steering pump.

They also told me that my brake pads and rotors are shot. I'm wondering if the noise is the pads and rotors chattering and when they looked into the noise they just happen to find the power steering pump issue and assume that's making the noise. I'm not sure, but I'm going to replace the pads and rotors before it goes bsck for the power steering pump so if the noise goes away after the brake change, I'll let you guys know.

Well i took it to the dealer and the mechanic and shop foreman says my rack and pinion are shot. I have the electronic steering and its a 3,000.00 repair. The clunk sound is coming from the internal of the rack hence the play in the steering shaft. Electronic meaning I dont have power steering pump etc control by computer some how.

No luck with the good will dept but they were very professional and willing to review my case. Again I have 75K miles on it and purchased the vehicle used. So far my experience with RAM, my local dealer, and forum advocate aka "Ram Cares" has been positive. This is my first ever Dodge product and so far so good despite the 2500.00 steering rack failure. Props to Dodge definitely not the Dodge company of the 80;s and 90's I grew up hearing horror stories about.

Be careful PRRAM. They may be over sensitive about being called "Dodge" now. Since I've had 2 prior "Dodge's", I still use that name and get corrected by my SA.
