I'm looking at purchasing a 09 ram quad cab with the 5.7 hemi .....with 209,000 miles... I talked to the seller and it seems like he has been keen on preventative maintenance and the first 150k was all highway (120 mile commute) he's asking 8,500 for it which seems semi fair. please tell me what you guys think. my overall plan for this truck is to use it for about 4 years accumulating 40-50k https://kalamazoo.craigslist.org/cto/d/dodge-truck-for-sale/6226331795.html I've been trying to find high mileage reviews but there isn't a ton out there to read.

First year of 4 gens, it is a good truck and sounds like a reasonable price especially 4x4. Invest on having a local mechanic take a look or at a minimum ask for a long test drive.

he used a non moly oil, if I was you and I buy it I would use a high moly oil.

It looks clean from the outside, nada.com actually shows the value as $11,300 for average trade in and $16,00 for clean retail which seems high. I just bought my 1st Ram so not a lot to offer other than that. It is a lot of miles, but doesn't appear to be hard miles.

Not sure if you noticed, but this looks like a big rust spot.

That's seems high for the mileage -
my buddy has a 08 he's thinking of trading with only 60k on it and the dealer told him he'd be lucky to get 6k, it's a clean truck. check it for rust, and beat him up on the price. Just because he says it is all hey miles doesn't make it true.

I sold my '09 Hemi Sport QC in Dec. with 131k on the odometer. Trade in offered was $10,500
if you know the history and all maintenance was done on time, sounds like an o.k. deal.

Not sure if you noticed, but this looks like a big rust spot.

Looks like the driver hung the rocker up on something and it's definitely rusting. Gouged rocker means it's not just exterior rust but also inside the cab channel.

It's a Michigan truck, so if you REALLY wanna know just how deep any rust issues may be, pop the left front fender liner at the cab wall (front door edge) and look inside there. Another option is like suggested, get a mechanic to look it over. Then you'll know about the mechanical stat's as well as it will be up on a lift. Before it goes up, remove the spare tire and when it's in the air check out the frame. You should also be able to see up into the bedside and rear fenderwells for good measure.

All good suggestions. Buying a truck with that many miles is a gamble. It could have something wrong with it and hes trying to get rid of it. Did he say why hes selling? Id have a mechanic look at it as others have said.

I have 190k on my 2009 Ram. I have done both front bearings ( i see they did too) rear diff bearings, transfer case shift motor and encoder. that is all the MAJORS. I did. runs great. I would be worried significantly about the rust in fenders and that body where damage is.

KBB on mine is $7,000-$10k. I have the Laramie package on mine with most of the goodies.

Curious to see what's under that rust area you circled there in your pic. Also, like previous post, check the inside of the cab in that area to see if it's rusted through.

These are all great ideas! My intention is to check it out this weekend and bring it to a mechanic. Are there any know problems that the 2009 has specifically? (being the first year of the forth Gen)

I'm rocking a 2011 with 184,000+ mikes and for its mileage she drives like a dream. Would I expect to get (4) more years out of it, not likely. I want to at least see it hit 200,000 before I just start using it as a " Sunday " truck.

Op will this be your only form of transportation ?

Yes it will be. Quick back round, I'm a 20 year old college student. I travel about 5-10 miles a day and abut 5-6 400 mile trips a year. I'm pretty mechanically inclined so any repairs I can do myself

Lol it means that I would use the truck for picking up things around and for the house solely. :)

As long as it's mechanically sound and the rust isn't really affecting (or won't) anything important it's probably ok. My first vehicle was my grandparents winter truck; while it lost weight everytime the doors closed or I hit a bump knocking off rust, it ran like a champ. Just realize rust is hard to stop.

That side, you could probably find something a few years older with less miles, and maybe no or less rust, for a lower price.

Hopefully it can go well beyond 200k. Ram claims to be the longest lasting pickup. When I owned my Silverado I was on their forum and they had a mileage thread. There were a TON of guys with 250k-350k on the 5.3. I even saw one 500k.

There are plenty of hemis out there with over 200k. If you look at used fleet sales youll see some with crazy high miles. Just took a 1600 mile trip recently i counted more Rams on DOT and state duty than the other two brands. The issue for the OP and anyone picking up any used high mileage vehicle is not really knowing how the previous owner treated it and what its current issues are. Even if there arent any immediate red flags its still a gamble unfortunately.

If I was you after looking at it and finding it to be "ok" I say get a pre approved loan get the cash before meeting to make a deal and offer 7 for it 7 seems fair for the year and mileage and just in case get a 8.5k loan just in case you have to do any repairs or just in case he doesnt budge on price and your dead set on getting this truck, good luck bud
