i know my dad, in 2004 bought a new 2500 quad cab cummins and wa told by the dealer not to put alot of load or beat on it for 500 miles.

is this true for gas engines? i know our outboards need 15 hours before we beat the hell outa em

In the owners manual it says not to tow or haul heavy loads for 500 miles I think.

It cannot hurt to take it easy for the first couple hundred miles, then change the oil and drive it like you stole it :driver:

I drove mine gentle for a couple hundred miles, then drove the way I wanted (WOT) after that. Best thing I did was put a trailer loaded with my old chevy and drove about 200 miles shortly after I bought the truck, truck runs so much better really helped it clear its throat.

Tough Question, whatever the Book says. I would limit high revs for a bit and no Burnouts till 500 Miles.

I believe driving it hard is best. I once had a grandma car and it was a piece of crap because it was babied.

Howdy,

The new engine has already been ran at the factory before it rolled out the door.

This was part of the emission calibrations.

I drove my truck, 2010 Dodge Ram QuadCam Big Horn Edition w/ a Hemi, easy for the first 500 miles then it was pedal to the metal!

drove 2000 miles before i defiantly drove it like i stole it...

I want the engine to set right before anything... and not have to go back to the stealership.... now i leave my cutout open all the time and touch the firewall more frquently

Drove mine gentle for first 500...then normal...still don't romp on it all the time...dont want to beat on it. Plan on keeping it for awhile.

Bringing this thread back to the top.... I just bought a new(?) 2011 1500ST Hemi 5.7 with tow and brake package and want to drag my camper about 50 mile each way next weekend. Camper weights about 3300 lbs and I should be able to get a couple hundred break in miles during this coming week. Should I be okay or should I wait until I get to the 500 mile mark? Found nothing in the owners manual about a break in period which I thought was odd.

You bought a new 2011? How many miles on it and why was the dealer hiding it?

yeah, brand new with 52 miles on it. Dealer said they got stuck with a couple from factory during a big sale. The dealer actually had the title, not Dodge. They wanted to move it as the warranty has been ticking for a few months. $9K under sticker so I hope I did okay. Paid pretty much what NADA trade in value would be on it as used. Also got the full lifetime warranty as long as we own it for a few bucks a month extra. Hoping to keep this one for a long time. Not a ton of options but it did have the towing and brake control packages that I was looking for in the 2012 I originally went to the dealer to look at.
So....Can I tow my 3300 pound trailer with this right away or should I wait a few weeks/miles?

Manual says break in is 500 miles for my 5.7 Hemi. It says limit speeds and vary speeds but give it a few full throttle rolling accelerations (not from a stop). I'm just over 550 miles now.
