I do tool and die for a living, and have thought about drilling and slotting my own rotors, has any one else done this ?

And before you post i am nit interested in any flame posts or arm chair enginers, honest factual input only. I eventually plan on buying black slotted and drilled rotors only for the anti rust properties of the black coating on the outside part of the rotors but since my rotots only have 16k miles i thought maybe i could do the work and high temp paint between the webs to stop rust

Not something I would do to a stock rotor as they are not engineered for it. metallurgy, structural design and thickness of each side of the rotor all come into play.

saving all the fancy terms most slotted or drilled rotors have a different make up in the metal that takes heat better or different. Plus the time and what money would you say? you can get drilled stock size replacement rotors for fairly cheap these days for just about any vehicle out there.

Drilled and slotted rotors worth it? Do you have to use different pads? Saw this.

Replaced at orielly auto with Wagner rotors and ceramic pads front/back is 350 and some change

I had BrakeMotive on my Grand Cherokee, they worked well and we're still in great shape after 15k miles when I traded it in.

I'm not sure what benefit drilled rotors will buy you, but there was a research article referenced here maybe 6 months ago which basically said that, if you are using your brakes hard (racing) drilled rotors provides opportunities for stress build up that will warp or crack them. Guys that use their brakes hard always use cast in holes (that may be machined to clean up). These types are much stronger. On the street, probably doesn't mater, drilling or slotting for the street doesn't mater. I'll try to dig up the article, it was pretty informative. It debunked a lot of the myths of drill/slots on the street if your goal is performance.

in all honesty I am just bored lol and though doing the work would give me something to do, I am sure the only really good thing about them is maybe added performance in the rain, other then that its a bling thing

At least for "drilled" rotors, they have to be drilled before the final heat treat. Drilling after the fact will get you cracked rotors in no time.

Drilled and slotted rotors aren't worth it even when they're made for it.

No professional racing series runs drilled rotors anymore. They just serve no purpose and only add stress risers to the rotor.

Most teams don't run slots anymore either. The J-Hook is the go to design on really nice brake setups.
