Just discovered while rotating my tires on weekend that my front diff does not have a cover, only a drain plug and fill plug

It is a non serviceable part. They are replaced as a whole if they go bad.

Not unusual, heck, my old Tacoma had a "clamshell" front diff. Had to demove it from the truck then split it open on a bench.......

No it didn't,they've been using the ZF front diff since 2013,and they don't have front covers.

not really sure on this because my current build sheet does not say HD front axle but my 2015 build sheet said HD front and rear axles. I cannot confirm as i did not keep truck long enough as i got high trade value and bought my new 2017 as i get dealer cost on vehicles from a friend
