Hey ya'll,

I've been dealing with fuel overflow at quite a few gas stations recently. It start off only happening at Sam's Club gas stations, but now seems to happen everywhere. I've changed the angle of the gas hose, I've slowed the rate of fuel going into the tank, all to no avail. I've had one gas station attendant say something about dodge having a recall on certain trucks for this issue, but I can find it anywhere. Anyways, I doubt dodge would service my '09 if there was an active recall on the issue.

anyways, any of you all have this happen to you, heard of it happening, and no of a cure for this? I'm just tired of it happening all the time now, and spilling gas all over my paint. I'm sure it can't be good in the long run.

Pretty widespread chrysler issue. my 07 did it until i had the entire tank replaced. (check valve is built into the filler neck. I believe many jeeps did it too.
i imagine if a 4th gen has the same integrated check valve...its going to do it until you replace the tank.

Our 2005 Durango did it until the day we sold it. If you got it anywhere near full it would blow gas back out of the tank. Got gas next to a lady on the other side of the pump one day her Durango did the same thing

WOW! I did always think it was odd that when mine stopped, it was FULL. NO topping it off at all or i get gas spillage. my old Toyota would hold at least another buck or two worth but this one broke my habit. when the pump shuts off, hang it up.

That's interesting. My 17 does not do that. I fill it, burp it twice and done. Never spills a drop. They must have corrected the issue?

Had a 2006 Durango that did it. Wife's 2004 Grand Cherokee (right before the body style change) did not do it. After that car was totaled, the 2006 Durango was purchased. My wife called it "puking" when it did it (she's a RN), "The Dingo puked at the gas station again today."

My 2010 Dakota never did it. The most widespread that I saw this, back when I researched it, was the 2004-2009 Durangos and 2005-2010 Grand Cherokees. I did hear that some of the Rams had it (of similar model years), but didn't think it was as widespread. For the Durangos (and maybe the Jeeps, can't recall), they had a TSB that came out for it, and rather than make it a recall, they gave it an "unlimited mileage" TSB that they would do for free, even if you were outside of your factory warranties.

I had to politely argue with a service manager a little to get it done to the wife's 2006, and produced the TSB number. The manager looked it up, admitted I was right, and they did the work... sort of. They claimed they couldn't replicate the issue, so rather than replace the tank (the TSB stated it may be necessary), they just did the fuel filler neck. Scratched the hell out of the paint around the gas door. Was short of cash at the time, so didn't get anymore work done to it at the time. Looking back on it, I should have went to the dealership and pushed for the paint to get fixed from the damage they did, but I was younger and more naive back then.

Definitely not normal for a 4th Gen Ram. Something wrong with the fuel filler neck (as others suggested, possibly check valve) or tank.

They must've corrected the problem because my 14 has never done this.

My 2011 does it all the time , I wrap towels around the neck to hopefully exorbe the fuel so it doest run down the side. I've learned where to slow it down, if I do that towards the end it usually prevents it but not always. I looked all around the tank even pulled the rear fender well out to get a better look to see if something was pinched I couldn't find a thing. Pretty sure the old Dakotas had a recall on it.

This happened to me the first few times I fueled my truck so I started taking an extra half-minute to jockey the pump nozzle a bit to guarantee it was as far in as it would go. At both of my favorite stations I can let it pump till it stops, give it one more squeeze like the TFLT guys, and no overflow issues.

My Dakota did the same thing and required the same attention at fueling.
Best,

My 09 does it so I don't fill it up I just put $40 or whatever is close in. It does it a lot to, spits it up all over under the filler and side of my truck.

with mine I can add approximately one gallon after the initial click/off. I just make sure I pump the gas at a slow rate (if the station is not busy), some times my range upon fill up is 600+ miles until empty. Me loves that number.

My old 2010 1500 and my current 2015 haven't done it but my old 2011 Nitro did it every time you filled it. Talk about annoying.

Has anyone figured out what caused it or what the fix was/is? Mine is doing it and it is rather annoying, not to mention fuel gets all over the paint, which can't be too good for it.

I'd like to fix it or get if fixed if possible.

My 2011 is not doing it.
Either the previous owner had it fixed or some have a defective check valve.

My 2012 doesn't do it, but my boat does...so I just turn the nozzle upside down when I fill the boat (which is rarely...it holds 45 gals, no need for that).

In my 2017 Rebel I cannot put another ounce in once it shuts off. Its never overflowed...unless I go to add ANY more gas.

Auto shut off at the pump...I pull it out of the tank. Its full.

My 2014 Durango could take another 1/2 gallon or so...but not my pickup. Clicks off...she's absolutely topped off.

Our 2011 1500 does this a lot. Not every single time, but very often. I'm not trying to top it off or anything. Just filling the tank, and letting the pump auto-shutoff do its thing. No rhyme or reason, can happen at any station at any time of year.

A year ago the local dealer said it had to be the filler neck, so, for $300+, I had it replaced. Filled up on the way home... no change, still puked fuel all over the side of the bed when the pump shutoff.

I know there was a recall for some other years/models of Ram trucks, but this one isn't on the list. Has anyone come up with a cause, and a solution? Is there a TSB somewhere I don't know about?

Thanks!
