Alright so, this has been something I've noticed for awhile. I have a 2014 Ram 1500 SLT 5.7. I'm not a mechanic by any means so I apologize if this is a dumb question. Obviously it's a lower speed issue, when turning and having the wheel turned significantly, loud squeal can be heard. I tried to check the power steering fluid to find out that it is a sealed unit. Not sure if this is wheel bearings or u joints, or what would cause this. Any ideas? Hoping this will be a cheap fix!

My guess would be the belt is slipping. See if there looks to be any residue from the belt on or around the power steering pump.

If it's a 2014,it doesn't have a power steering pump, they use an electric rack.So there's nothing to check as far as fluid levels go concerning the power steering system.

Just curious what year they started that? I saw it on my window sticker, or some list of options. Never had a vehicle without a p/s pump, so I figured it was something new. I popped the hood to confirm it. Sure enough, no pump.

But in that case I don't have a clue what it is if it only happens when turning.

2013's were the first year to have the electric steering rack.

I knew it was electric, should I just take to my mechanic? It's just annoying but I don't feel that I should neglect it forever either

Hi hudgenja,

Sorry to hear about this! If you end up deciding to visit a local RAM dealership for further diagnosis I'd be happy to offer assistance if needed. Just PM our page with your VIN and let me know.

A squealing noise when turning can be something as simple as the front end being out of alignment. This is more typical on smooth surfaces.

With the engine running and the truck in park, open the hood and have someone crank the wheel from left stop to right stop and back again a couple of times while you look and listen. You'll probably figure out where its coming from.

Will give that a try, thanks for the feedback
