May be a silly question but I had a 14 Sport with hemi and 3.21s and now a Laramie with hemi and 3.92s. Both have a 26 gal tank. When I used to fill the Sport the computer would show 400+ miles to empty but the Laramie only shows a little over 350 miles til empty from a full tank. Any idea why? Seems like it wouldn't know a difference from a full tank until after I started driving and it calculated my mpg's. I always reset my mpg computer when I fill up.

The 3.21s are better for gas mileage......

Yep

I've noticed in mine, it calculates miles to empty based on the previous cluster displayed MPG. In winter with lots of remote starts & displayed 11 mpg, it will say about 280 miles to empty. In summer with no remote starts & more highway road trips, currently 15.6 average; my miles to empty were about 380 (IIRC) after yesterday's fill up.

It calculates based on the mpg rate for previous calculations (not sure how previous it uses), but I have filled the tank, and had it say 350 till empty for example, then for the next hour or two of driving, the miles to empty keeps going UP, not down, till it reads 450 or so before it starts dropping again.

It is all an estimate and just based on the average mpg that the computer calculates for you. Take it with a grain of salt always. My truck (2016 Hemi with 3.21 gears) says I average around 18 mpg usually, but when I hand calculate my mileage it is more like 17. When I fill up my 32 gallon tank it will often give me a range over 500 miles, but I will really only get 400-425 or so. It is all relative and just an estimation.

If it's brand new it's also breaking in still. Between 5 and 10k miles you should notice an increase. I maintain a hand calculated log to compare and to look for any sudden, unexplained increased fuel consumption.

I also think they make them with a built in safety range. I know my gas gauge can go all the way to the red and give me the low fuel light with my 32 gallon tank but when I go fill up I'm only putting 27 gallons in. That's a 5 gallon buffer. Seems a bit overkill to me but I guess I've never ran outta gas so that's a plus lol

I would trade my 3.21 for 3.92 and less gas mileage in a heartbeat. I had an 04 with 3.92 a 13 with 3.55 and now a 15 with 3.21. Keeps getting lower and slower.

There is a thread about this on this forum. I think there is TSB with corresponding flash to fix the gauge calibration.

It sounds like there is more estimation with the gassers. On full 26 gallon tank I'm at right around the 600 miles to empty mark and is pretty close to being correct. I do drive a very consistent path. Like you said it's all an estimation and relative to how the vehicle is driven.

on a related note, I went about 20 miles past 0 miles to empty and just in "LOW FUEL" last Friday while pulling about 6,000 lbs and when I filled up it took 25.6 gallons, so it's safe to say if not towing a load you probably have 25-30 miles remaining once you've entered LOW FUEL.

today, I went about 6 miles past 'empty' and was only able to fit 27 gallons in my 32 gallon tank. I'm past zero miles left and I still have 5 gallons left in the tank???!! This makes me bat**** crazy. :flame:

Yeah I have the 26 gallon and at 0 until empty it fills with about 24 gallons. So roughly 30-40 miles left depending on city or freeway

This has been an "issue" for years but Ram has supposedly received enough complaints lately that they're releasing a flash at some point to adjust the programming.
