Does the oil change light actually sense anything? I bought my truck used with 28000 miles, According to service records the oil was changed at 25000 miles at a dealer. I changed the oil at 32000 in an effort to get on factory schedule. The light came on at 33800. I reset the light then. Now at just shy of 37000 miles the light is back on. This has me puzzled. If it does sense when the oil needs to be changed what are the parameters it uses?
Thanks!

Oil change light

It has a preset that the oil needs to be changed every 3,000 miles from when the message is turned off. This is because they expect consumers to use conventional oil instead of synthetic, but when you use synthetic, you end up with this message for a good 4,000 miles. It's so annoying, I have the same thing.

That's definitely weird. I've only had mine come on once on each truck and that was back below 6,000 miles

I just reset it when it pops up, and change oil by mileage, every 10,000km or so with synthetic

I also just reset it when it comes on. I am not changing my oil at 3000 miles no way. The 2013s have gone to a smart sensor system but I think all before that are just a set interval dummy light.

I know in 11 it is an interval light (mine is set at 8k miles) with a start cycle counter. If you try to start the vehicle more than a certain number of times before the mileage counter is reached it trips the light as well.

Read your owners manual guys, it also a time thing. Even if you haven't gone the distance, your OM says change it at 6 months level. The time to get extended drain intervals is after your warranty is up. Until then it is 6000 miles or 6 months, WHICH EVER COMES FIRST.

That depends on the year. 2011 and 2012 are 8,000 or 6 months. And I doubt it's based on time seeing on mine it came on twice almost 30,000 miles and probably 14 months apart. And seeing that the OP's is coming on frequently

My point isn't about the light, pump that gas pedal three times and that goes away. I'm just pointing out that no matter how many miles you have the owners manual says 6 mos. So either follow that, or lie and say you did if your engine needs warranty work.
