What is the differences between overdrive on and off. The only thing I can tell is the shift points are moved some and that's it? I couldn't tell if the shifting got any firmer or anything else?

Overdrive is typically just a higher gear to allow lower rpms for better gas mileage on the highway.

Turning it off just stops it from shifting into that gear. Nothing else would really change.

I'm sorry I meant to say turning on Tow/Haul mode. I'm so used to the overdrive feature on my previous cars.

should not let the truck shift into 6th if a 6 speed or 8th if a 8 speed, also as u apply breaks it will tell the truck to down shift to help u slow down, it will also hold gears longer- I use mine when city driving so the damn thing isn't running through all the gears from light to light.

The 8 speed will run through all 8 gears.

So basically all it amounts to is slightly different programming of the transmission and nothing more. Interesting it will stay in 8th gear while towing, seems a little sketchy.

It can go into 8th.. Tow haul changes your shift points. And the 8 speed doesn't need to be in tow haul to start down shifting when you hit the brakes.

on my 09, when I use Tow Haul, I can feel it hit overdrive but it does not lock the torque converter (i think) it changes the shift points and disables MDS. I love the way it downshifts.

The manual for the 6 speed auto says it locks out overdrive. In the 8speed the only way I can get mine to go into 8th in Tow/Haul is to use cruise control. I think it's the same on the 6speed but anything under 1:1 ratio is typically referred to as overdrive. Both tranny's have 2 top gears like this. In manual transmissions, 4th gear is typically 1:1.

8 speed uses all 8 unless you use the manual mode to lock it out. also 7 and 8 are both overdrive gears on it
