Just curious if its ok to pull someone out of snow in 4wd high or do I have to be in 4wd low or does it depend on the situation? What do you guys do? Thanks. ( I am aware of the liability issues when pulling someone out, I only would help friends I know)

So far I have only had to pull out two of my friends who did not own a four-wheel-drive who tried to make it to work. Granted the very horrible stock Goodyear tires did not make things any easier.

I only had to use 4HI or Loc to pull both of the front wheel drive cars out. I don't think I would ever use 4low except in case of an emergency for my immediate family. Especially with this BW44-44 transfer case.

I did purchase these little items to help two years ago. I just purchased another strap a few weeks ago. The D–ring bow shackle is rated for 10,000 pound capacity. Having to 2/3extra straps is always a benefit to.

I just use 4 hi and give them a little jerk with the strap. I leave a little slack. I wouldn't be opposed to using 4 low. That's how I do it. IMO.

4low will always be better for pulling someone out due to the torque output in low. But in most cases wheel spin or a good jerk is needed, this is when 4hi comes in handy

Using 4 Low will give you better low end torque to pull someone out.
Get a recovery strap(not a lifting strap), they have a bit of stretch to them that aids in pulling them out. You want it rated for approximately 2 to 3 the load you are pulling out. ARB ARB705 2-3/8" x 30' Recovery Strap - 17500 lbs Capacity https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004P9DQLC/

I have always used 4 low. I would rather have that torque first hand than have to take two swipes at it.

I pulled my cousin and his new Chevy Colorado out of the mud twice in about 10 mins. The ground is clay and slick. I used 4 HI because I needed the wheels to continue spinning once I got him moving.

it depends of the strap you are using. I have a snatch strap, it stretches up to 20%, so the idea is to use you truck mass and inertia to pull the other car out.
you can see how it works here https://youtu.be/KcUDgmSMhWk

You could grab some open country M/T 35" tires, and just use 2WD :p

4 low for sure, you can get more than enough speed up and much easier on the truck to use the lower gears. You can do over 30 mph in 4 lo, btw.

Try to refrien from pulling them out in reverse especially if it is a heavy load or going to take some force - Not good for the axel"s.

Also gears don't have the same strength in reverse as they do in drive.

Huh?

Your more likely to break teeth off your gears in reverse. They are not designed to handle a lot of torque in reverse

One, I'm 99.9% sure that's incorrect, and two, in 49 years of living in Alaska, pulling people out and being pulled out, I've never once seen a transmission, diff, or transfer case gear failure from pulling either forward or backward. Not in a full size Ford, GMC, Dodge, through S-10's all the way down to an all wheel drive Tempo. Never.
