Rain sensing wipers: What sets them off? They seem to work only sporadically.

Headlights with wipers: On my 14 this worked flawlessly, wipers on lights on and indicator on dash lit up. On this 16, when wipers are on the headlight and fog light indicator don't light up. I haven't proved if they are on yet or not.
Thougts?

There's a sensor on the back of you rearview mirror that controls them. I don't have them myself but I think you put your wipers on the 1st notch of the "delay" setting to activate them....

My headlights come on automatically when I have my wipers on for more then a couple of minutes on anything above "halfway" on the delay setting or above.

I don't know what sets off the wipers but I shut that feature off the first time it rained. The rain was sporadic in volume and the wipers would swipe slow but when the rain increased to a hard downpour they went crazy fast and completely stopped my forward view.
As far as lights on/wipers on mine work great.

Rain Sensing Wipers — If Equipped

This feature senses moisture on the windshield and
automatically activates the wipers for the driver. The
feature is especially useful for road splash or overspray
from the windshield washers of the vehicle ahead. Rotate
the end of the multifunction lever to one of five settings
to activate this feature.

The sensitivity of the system can be adjusted with the
multifunction lever. Wiper delay position 1 is the least
sensitive, and wiper delay position 5 is the most sensitive.
Setting 3 should be used for normal rain conditions.
Settings 1 and 2 can be used if the driver desires less
wiper sensitivity. Setting 4 and 5 can be used if the driver
desires more sensitivity. Place the wiper switch in the
OFF position when not using the system.

NOTE:

• The Rain Sensing feature will not operate when the
wiper switch is in the low or high-speed position.

• The Rain Sensing feature may not function properly
when ice, or dried salt water is present on the windshield.

• Use of Rain-X® or products containing wax or silicone
may reduce Rain Sensing performance.

• A customer programmable feature in the Electronic Vehicle
Information Center (EVIC) allows the Rain Sensing
feature to be turned off. Refer to “Electronic Vehicle
Information Center (EVIC)/Personal Settings (Customer-
Programmable Features)” in “Understanding Your Instrument
Panel” for further information.

The Rain Sensing system has protection features for the
wiper blades and arms, and will not operate under the
following conditions:

• Low Ambient Temperature—When the ignition is first
turned ON, the Rain Sensing system will not operate
until the wiper switch is moved, vehicle speed is
greater than 0 mph (0 km/h), or the outside temperature
is greater than 32°F (0°C).

• Transmission In NEUTRAL Position — When the
ignition is ON, and the transmission is in the NEUTRAL
position, the Rain Sensing system will not
operate until the wiper switch is moved, vehicle speed
is greater than 5 mph (8 km/h), or the shift lever is
moved out of the NEUTRAL position.

Remote Start Mode Inhibit — On vehicles equipped
with Remote Starting system, Rain Sensing wipers are
not operational when the vehicle is in the remote start
mode. Once the operator is in the vehicle and has placed
the ignition switch in the RUN position, rain sensing
wiper operation can resume, if it has been selected, and
no other inhibit conditions (mentioned previously) exist.

You have to have your headlights set to "Auto" for them to come on with your wipers....

That is done too. You know lack of auto headlights was why I didn't buy a Tundra SR5 with leather and sun roof

My anecdotal experience is that the auto lights turn on once the auto wipers have been triggered for a certain amount of time, assuming that the dash indicator is on whenever the headlights are on. If it's light sprinkle and the wipers are only activated occasionally the lights in my truck won't come on. If the rain is a little more consistent then I've found that the lights will kick on.

You don't have to use the auto headlight function. You can turn them on and off manually just like any truck without auto headlights.

Now auto high beams is another feature for the cool factor, but sounds better in theory than practice lol
