The window sticker on my 2012 Ram Express Crew Cab shows that the following:

32-Gallon Fuel Tank $ 75

I just emptied my first tank of gas and filled it up. The gauge said I was empty and the idiot light and low fuel alarm went off. Do I really have a 32 gallon tank though? It would only take 26 gallons to fill it up. Do they use the same sending unit that is in the stock tank or something? What gives?

My old truck was supposed to have a 32g tank aswell. W the low fuel light on for about 15 mile of. "1 & 1/8" of a gallon that was supposed to b left when the light comes on. I could still only get 27-28 g, filled all the way to the gas cap

Usually when the light goes on its a low fuel warning as there's usually about 3-5 gallons left not completely empty

When Empty Isn't

My 2012 Sport CC has a 32 gallon tank. When I hit 1/4 it requries 24 gallons to fill.

It is never a good idea to run your tank dry as water is heavier than gas and collects at the bottom of the tank. Too much water in your injection system, especially all at once, is a bad thing. Even the best quality gas can be contaminated in the ground, or by condensation over time in your gas tank.

There is room for debate about how well fuel system cleaners actually clean, but one thing many of them really do well is absorb up to 10% of their volume in water and allow it to pass harmlessly through the combustion process.

You might be able to run down to near empty (with a chase car with more gas cans) but don't let it run dry for the above reasons. When you limp to a gas station and fill up you'll definitely know whether you have a 26 or 32 gallon tank. :jawdrop:

Be glad. At 13 MPG, there'd be a lot of Ram owners walking and carrying gas cans. :) That was an adjustment for me as well (3 weeks into my Ram now). DTE may read 50 mi, but it takes nearly 4 gallons to get there in the Ram. In my previous car, it was 2.5 gal.

Anyone know what the usable amount of fuel is. Is it the full 32 or is it more like 30 etc.

it would never be all your gas, your fuel is used as a coolant, so its bad for you truck if its all gone

Good point. With fuel injection there has to be a reserve for cooling--but my point about water remains valid; you don't want to suck up the nasty in the bottom of your fuel tank.

I doubt its the full 32.

The only way i c to truely know the size of the tank, would b to run it completely dry and fill up w that. But as stated, that could b very bad.

I just put 30 into my 35 gallon tank. The DTE indicator reading would have equalled 2 gallons in the tank.
