Hey everybody went to a dealer to start to get a price on a ram 1500 that I am ordering. The dealer told me because i was ordering the ram boxes i would have to register the truck commercial plates because the ram boxes put the truck over 5500 lbs has anyone else run into this issue? any solutions, i would really like to have the ram boxes but there is no need for me to have commercial plates

I have the ram boxes on mine and I've never even heard of that issue honestly. That seems very strange to me. I don't see how the Ram Boxes could possibly make the truck heavier...I kind of thought they would make the truck lighter if anything because they're hollow. Maybe someone else can chime in with more specific knowledge.

It might help if you let us know what state you're in, because I suspect that the laws on that would be different depending on the state you live in.

That's an interesting twist! I certainly would certainly investigate with the DMV.

Wow, New York really sucks
It seems like your options here are to just register it as a commercial vehicle in the 5,501-6000 lb range and pay the $86.50 fee or you have to put a shell on the truck (rendering the ram box useless) and install seats/seat fittings in the bed and then you can register it as a passenger vehicle with registration fees of $105 a year

I think it might be worth checking out what your insurance would be on a non-commercial vehicle with commercial plates on it. Im sure this is pretty common in New York since every 2500/3500 is more then 5500 lbs

Son has a 2009 ram crew with the ram box. his comes in at 5303 lbs. Not sure what they have added to the 13's to put them over the 5500 lbs. Buy the way I have a 2009 ram crew with out the ram box and it weighs 5205lbs.

Air could do it, but they took weight OUT of the trucks for 2013 too! Frame and steering system took out quite a bit.

Sux to live in the regulatory state of perdition. But hey, you guys elected Cuomo and his apparatchiks.

It all goes off of the unladen weight listed on the sticker inside your door/on your title
If it says 5534 lbs there's no changing it no matter what you take off or add

I'm in NY too and you definitely don't want to have to register as commercial because there's a bunch of roads you aren't allowed to drive on with a commercial vehicle. Down by me you get a nice fat ticket on the Hutchinson River Parkway if you get caught with commercial plates.

It's interesting that never crossed any of the salesmen's minds when I was discussing desired specs with them. I wound up passing on the RamBox because it was just too much after deciding on a Sport, but I'd be pissed right now if I was sitting here waiting for my build and just found out from this forum that I'm going to have to register as commercial because of the boxes and my salesmen didn't mention it!

So would that mean if you bought a 2500 you'd have to have commercial plates as well? That's just a wierd law. And like you said, if your limited to certain roads, then it would be a huge pain in the butt.
