Ok fellas I have a concern about the oil change indicator on these here 4th gen Rams. From what I have been told and have read the oil change light comes on when the truck senses the oil needs changed. NOT BY A SET MILEAGE.

However, I beg to differ. I had the oil changed at 7120 miles ( no indicator on ) at the stealer because they offered a free change ( Dino oil ). THE NEXT DAY the oil change message came up and I took it back and the dealer reset it.

My second oil change happened at 13100 miles. I changed it myself and went synthetic. Again there was no indicator on. Now at 15,200 miles the oil change message came up? WHAT GIVES??

It seems to me it's set at 7500 to 8000 mile intervals and it's not measuring viscosity or whatever its supposedly measuring.

Anyway how do I reset the message? Turn key on and pump gas pedal 3 times?? Something like tht right??

I'd assume it's much like all the other oil condition monitoring systems. It looks at the inputs / temperatures the engine is running and and tells how 'broken down' the oil is.

I'm just about to 3k. It's going to get a dino oil change. at 6K I'm switching to synthetics with a 9k change interval.

Problem is both times my light came on it had fresh oil in it

Turn the key to on and pump the gas pedal 3 times. It doesn't "sense" anything. Its purely done on mileage.

same issue happened to mine so I now go by my mileage not the trucks since im doing it less than 8k intervals. Now I just have to reset it at the odd times

Your opinion and mine are the same!

The dealer and many different things I have read say something different LOL

I will just reset it after every change since I will be doing 5k to 6k intervals on Mobil1

I agree, I changed my oil on my 09 and two weeks later the warning came on. It may have moved 10 miles in that time frame. I call BS

I think that system is useless. For the first three times mine literally came on at exactly 2500 miles from the previous change. At one point my wife and I were riding along and I saw that my Trip B (the one I use for keeping track of oil changes) was nearing 2500...we watched it roll to 2500 and there the light was.

I just reset it if it pops up and continue to do Mobil 1 Synthetic at every 6k miles.

In my experinces and with what you just posted I won't say its useless. However I would say its a great reminder for those that don't keep track of their maintenance. I was really impressed when the dodge mechanic told me the trucks system sensed when the oil was broken down and would shoot a message for an oil change.

Needless to say I was very skeptical after they performed my first oil change and the message came on soon thereafter. Heck I almost accused them of not changing the oil. Glad I didn't!!

It does not analyze the oil. Good lord, have you seen the size of a molecular analysis machine?! It's just algorithms people!

That being said, I'd agree with sticking to a regular oil change schedule!
