I would use the zf fluid or another fluid that is approved by zf if there is one

We live in a throw away world. Many people plan to trade in and don't do a single bit of maintenance or preventative maintenance so they don't care. I have already done my fluid and filter 3 times at 92k on 5 speed. Cheap prevention if you ask me.

At 120,000 mi I scheduled to have the fluid changed in my 2013 Ram 3.6 8 speed and they advised that it was permanent and did not need to be changed. I have the unlimited mileage warranty as I plan to get 400,000- 500,000 out of this truck. Used only for light duty.

To add to the discussion, the service manager at the dealership from whom I purchased my 2017 5.7 1500 with the 8-speed recommended a 60K mile service interval for the 8-speed in the Ram trucks. The trans pan/filter assembly is ~$250 - $300, the fluid is ~$30/quart with ~ 8 quarts needed, and the exhaust (the y-pipe from the cat's, as the driver's side crossover passes right beneath the trans pan) has to be dropped (on the 5.7's at least) for pan access. Approximate cost would be close to, or over $1k dependent entirely on how long the job takes and the hourly labor rate. Something to budget for as the miles accumulate on the truck.
