thanks everyone for the suggestions ( except for the mega cab one, lol). The swing out boxes might be the way to go for me. Definitely cheaper than a mega cab. Locking the ammo can with a bicycle cable temporarily was a good suggestion too. i'll have to dig my cable out of the shed. I always seem to be hauling **** for someone or bringing something home to take apart and make **** with but looking back I've rarely needed the entire bed. Thanks to everyone that posted links and pics of tool boxes. I'll probably stay on the lookout for a used one on the cheap and try that out and see how I like it

Swing box worked great for me for when I used to have my ram. Just drop the tailgate, and pull the metal piece at the bottom, and it swings right out for you. I just had one on the driver side. I fit quite a bit in there, and it was perfect for me.

If you have a tonneau cover, it works even better because no one can't see it, so it's secure. It does have a key on the top to lock it, but it's rare when I lock it.

I have the swing out boxes as well. Very handy, they are lockable and easy to remove. I keep all my tools in them. With the tailgate up and locked they cannot be removed. I have to remove them to put my quad in the box though, or at least one of them as the tires rub. Other than that they are very handy. I would definitely recommend them.

should have gotten the Ram Boxes lol. Some of the jeep guys find places to mount a ammo box under the hood by bolting it to the inner fender wall or firewall. Some use a large ammo can as a center console too on old TJ's that don't have consoles. maybe bolt one to the floor behind the console and wrap in carpet or color match or find somewhere to mount one under the hood

I really like my swing out boxes. You can lock them and remove them if you need more room. I also have a backflip and the back box that can be folded away if you need more room

How much clearance is between the top of the swing out boxes and the bottom of the bed rail? It looks like you have tonneau cover with clamps that hang down, looking for how much clearance room for those clamps.

Not a ton but more than enough. Maybe 1inch or 2 but they don't touch
