Transfer Case Fluid BW44-44 ???

I have a 2011 Ram 1500 Sport and its has the BW44-44 transfer case. Everything thing i read on multiple forms is that it requires a special blue fluid from the dealer. I looked around online and bought some, but when i showed up today it was red fluid. Did i get the wrong stuff? It was purchased from a dealer and the bottle says pre 2016 bw44-44. Did they just change the color recently. Help me out im confused?

Yeah, the color changed within the last year or so.

I changed mine in the fall about two months ago. For the first time. The FF fluid was a dark red thick looking mess.

I actually bought 1 quart of the expensive BW44-44 fluid from Amazon for $24 a quart (Red).
Then after chatting with a service tech he informed me that this fluid is just equivalent of Dex III fluid.

Personally I see no reason in the world to pay $24 a quart for a fluid that is not really needed.
So I chose to not buy another quart of the Mopar and by 1 quart of the Amsoil ATF MV.

I will leave this combo in there for 30,000 miles and then drain and fill back with 2 quarts of RL D4. I can get the RL cheaper then the Amsoil MV (in which I have to pay tax and shipping).

So just reviving this old discussion, regarding my RAM 3500 6.7L TD. For the transfer case, the manual says "Mopar BW44–44", but does not give a specification like it does for the differential (75w-140). It seems like this is a bit of a money grab perhaps, there has to be an equivalent specification but I don't want to put the wrong thing in. Does anyone know what that spec is?

Keep looking in your manual. The BW 44-44 case is a 1500 part. I do not know what they put in the HD trucks.

some people guess bw went backwards to find a protective oil and that it is just dex iii, I dont see any voa's probably because it would cost 30 bucks a qrt and then someone would have to pay for the voa. Many folks run amsoil multi vehicle as a alternative. However, you have a young cummins and if you are still in warranty, since those engines have enough power to chew up any part of the driveline from pedal to tires, maybe you should think about paying the devils charge of 2 qrts for 60 bucks.

If you can find a qrt of bw44-44 fluid, the spec will be on the bottle. Maybe it is Mopar 62255SC but I dont know.

Yeah, since the transfer case doesn't take much oil and doesn't have to be changed often, I'd agree to just pay the obscene profit margin for the little oil you need.

Who knows what the friction characteristics are of the clutches they used for "Auto 4WD"? Or you can look up the transfer case on Borg-Warner's website to see what they say about. Probably the same marketing blather.
