I've had my '17 1500 for almost a month now and noticed that it does not coast the way that I'm used to. As soon as I take my foot off the gas, it'll downshift immediately. Granted, the latest model that I had driven prior to this one is an '04 (that one would coast forever). So maybe this is just the way the later models are?

By no means is this a deal-breaker for me. Love this truck. Just wondering if I should be concerned or not..

I have a 2015 1500, I did notice the same thing , I shut off the Hill Assist and that seemed to make a difference.. You can turn it on or off through the radio a,d there should be info in the manual I think! I will follow this thread to see what the right answer is if I am wrong! FYI I am a Old Fart and wrong alot just ask my Ex wife lol
FYI I do have the 8 Speed transmission and a V 6. And shutting off the Hill Assist seemed to reduce the down shifting ! I do have to touch my brakes a little more now :O Very easy to turn on and off. Worth a shot!

That's the first thing I noticed about my 2016 Ram 1500. It feels like it brakes when you let off the gas pedal

The transmission will learn how you drive after awhile. Mine seemed to coast better after a few thousand miles

The 8-speed programming is designed to help you slow down, to save your brakes at least a little, when you let off the gas. It was that way on my 2013, my current 2014, and my wife's 2014 Grand Cherokee (Hemi, same transmission).

The Hill Start Assist senses your on an incline opposite of the direction of travel and will hold your brakes briefly(or once you hit the accelerator) to keep you from rolling backwards. It works great when pulling a boat out of the water.
I have noticed no difference with it on or off affecting normal driving.

IIRC the 8spd transmission torque converter doesn't unlock above 3rd gear.

Spot on and does nothing to how you coast. That must be one of those placebo deals.

Mine does this as well. Learned to let up on throttle to just where it is pressed enough to activate. You can feel it if you pay attention. Learned to coast like that and it still will read up to 99 mpg while doing this.

I'd rather be in high rpm's generally always so I would prefer that, but if it was causing any drag when you were trying to hold speed, I would find that an issue. What rpm's are you talking about, what are the rpm's before the shift and after the shift.

My 13' does this exactly like you described. I actually hate it, to the point i am looking for another truck... Real annoying. Love the ride, but the tranny sux balls.
