Had a routine oil change and tire rotation done on my 2016 Laramie and the dealer performed 3 software updates. All are listed as "99reflash". I remember one was for the tranny and one for the display - cant remember what the 3rd was for.

Having some issues with my vision, I immediately notice the radio display was fairly dim as if it was in night mode. I always have the selector switch in auto, the day/night setting in the radio settings to auto, and the dimmer up full to the first detent. Checked all the settings and the dimmer switch only to find the dimmer switch no longer works. All other settings are ok just no dimmer. Tried it with the lights off - still no dimmer. With the lights turned on manually - the dimmer now works but the display is still very dim.

Back in to the dealer, and after the service manager consulted the tech, I'm told this new update is being done due to issues with the sensor (he pointed to the dash mounted light sensor) burning up. Really? Think I would have heard about that here? I asked him to reverse it - no can do.

With the dimmer all they way up to the first detent I always had full brightness - that is no longer the case. It is always in night mode brightness and can only be dimmed when the lights are on.

I can live with the dash brightness but can barely see the radio display. And I think someone is whizzing on my leg and telling me it's raining.

It seems the dealers want to reflash your truck everytime you take it in.
If there is nothing that you feel is wrong then they should not be reflashing anything.

They won't if you tell them not to flash anything without asking you first.

One more reason to not take it to the dealer, overpriced repairs and they like to fix what aint broken.

Hey pitboss000,

I'm not 100% sure which update this is--if you wanted to send your VIN, I can double-check, and let you know about the sensor issue.

I did ask them to check for anything tranny related. I've always felt the first to second **** was sluggish under a normal takeoff - like it was shifting too early. That was one of the updates and they decided to do the other 2 as well. I remembered to tell them not to wash it (they don't dry it well, spots all over my dark paint) but didn't think a flash would be a bad thing. Who knew? Never heard of this problem here or elsewhere, but I guess someone has to be first.

On a side note - unless they put it in "re-learn" mode (he said they did a flash), the transmission is shifting great! Still shifts quick (it is an 8 speed) but so smooth now!

I will be asking for details on future flashes BEFORE they are done but if they claim it's supposed to be an improvement - how do you know otherwise? I still feel something went wrong with the update though - I mean, why would they disable the dimmer switch and lower the overall brightness?

When my MDS soleloid failed a few weeks back, no local shop would touch it, so I took it to the dealer. After getting it back, I noticed they performed a couple of flashes to the PCM and since then, my HEMI responds like a V6 pulling a trailer... Has me seriously looking at a different/newer Ram now (and not from this particular dealership). They have no answer for why it feels so sluggish now.

and thats why I wont let them flash mine for no reason, I have read alot of bad things on "re'flashs"

Your thinking about a new truck because they jacked yours up you should go back and have a long talk with the dealer and how after he flashed it you truck runs like chit now.

I have talked to them about it. They have no excuse as to why it is unresponsive and sluggish. "The flash update shouldn't have affected it in that way at all" is all I hear. To me, it seems like the "death flash" of the 2nd Gen Ram trucks.

Did you try "resetting" the throttle position sensor, and/or disconnecting the battery for a while and "resetting" the computer that way? Sometimes flashes do weird things to the learned settings, and they need to be reset.
