About ready to pull the trigger, any difference in the Bilsteins or Ranchos Loaded? Install on one or the other? Do I need to do the rear also? Just looking to level and do a body lift?
Difference between the Bilsteins and Ranchos...
Bilsteins are monotube (upgrade over factory), Ranchos are twin-tube (same as factory).
Bilsteins lack ride adjustment, Ranchos have 9 positions of ride firmness.
Bilsteins can be adjusted in .7" increments from 0-2.8" of lift, Ranchos are permanently set at roughly 2.25"
Bilsteins can come in handy for leveling your vehicle after a lift kit is put on, Ranchos are mostly worthless since they cannot be adjusted down from 2.25"
Bilsteins require you to move the coil spring from your OEM strut over to the new strut (requires a spring compressor or trip to your local shop). Ranchos are pre-assembled and take, at most, an hour to do each side of your truck.
Bilsteins are difficult to find in stock, but they are cheaper than the Ranchos. Rancho is also running a Spring promotion right now. But 2 QLLs and 2 RS9000XLs for the rear and get $120 rebate. Essentially making 1.5 of the rear RS9000XLs free since they are about $80-90/each.
In my research, I've decided to wait and go with Bilsteins despite them being more work. The adjustability and much wider array of positive reviews has pushed me toward them over the twin-tube Ranchos. I've seen many people on Ford forums that added RS9000XLs to the rear have problems with them after loading their beds and/or towing.
