I have a 3rd gen, so take this with a grain of salt...but I am running 38x13.50x20. 6" suspension and 3" bl. I recently added Bilstein 5100s up front, and plan to lift the rear..so, I will have more room. Currently no rubbing issues. However, this is a show truck, not daily driven or off road.
I'd say anything more than a 13.50 is too wide. Not to mention...not really safe for an IFS set up...unless it's a show rig that never gets driven and is a trailer queen.
Yeah with a 6" suspension and 3" body you can clear 40s. Like Dan mentioned the problem is the width. The guy above running 38x15.5x20 measured and said they are actually only 13.7 sidewall to sidewall. I think Interco makes some bigger tires that aren't too wide (in the 14" literal range). Mine are 37x13.5x20 but actually measure 14.1" wide. They clear but only because my backspacing because it's really close. I think some lift kits may allow for a little wider tire too.
38s on it if its a 4x4. as long as you dont try to go too crazy with the width. i had 20x12 on a 2wd with 10 inches of lift and it rubbed when we turned but its also a 2wd that sits lower from factory to start.
