I tore the sidewall on one of my stock tires, so I'm going to take this opportunity to upgrade to some BFG TA KO2s. I had them on a RWD Dakota and the difference they made on dirt and snow was incredible. I've got some questions about the sizing and tire pressure though.

My truck is a stock Ram 1500 4x4 Big Horn Quad Cab.

First, the stock size is 275/60R20, but I've heard 275/65R20 might work too. I wouldn't mind having the extra half inch or so of sidewall. Is there anyone running 275/65R20 on a stock truck? Does it rub at all? What does everyone else think?

The other big question is pressure. Both of those tires have much higher maximum pressures than the stock tires and they have a different load rating. 65 and 80PSI respectively. Is 36-40PSI OK to run? Should I go higher? Is the TPMS going to be an issue if I do?

I've also been considering going with 18" rims (same tire diameter). The 20" ones have always seemed to be a little on the low profile side. 18" might offer better protection from pot holes, rocks, etc... I'm thinking I'll probably stick with 20" rims for now though and only change them if I have a good reason to.

You should still run them at the vehicle manufacturer recommended tire pressure or a hair higher with the heavier tires.

The recommended tire pressure for my 1500 Sport with the 20's is 39psi.

I'm running my summer Cooper STT Pro's 35x12.5x20 at 42psi & my winter Duratracs 275-65-20 also at 42psi.....no issues.

OK. I think I'll keep them in the 40-45PSI range.

Do you think the 275/65R20 would be fine on a stock truck?

BFG recommends 55psi for the stock size of 275.60.20 and I have tried it but it rides like a tank!!

Thanks for the help. I'm probably going to get the 275/60R20 after all since they are in stock at a nearby sears.

I put 275/65/20 on mine with no issues, and keep them at 40-42 psi.

I would stick to 17" cause the price difference from that to a 18" is huge. I was cheaper for me to go from a 17" to a 20" than going to a 18" believe it or not.

I don't like how crowned the thread is on the BFGs and if you run too high of pressure, they look even worse. I'd probably run them as low as your truck will allow to flatten the thread and less crowning.

I agree with 07Mega, as tires have odd prices. It's more expensive for an 18" tire and I can only point at the lack of popularity, which causes fewer choices. 17s are probably the cheapest when it comes to our trucks.

You're a fool if you go by what the inside door or manual recommends for air pressure when you do not have the same brand, tread, load rating, or size that it came with from the factory.
