so iv been researching compressors for a while and narrowed it down to VIAIR but had no idea about these cool OBA kits. i was going to get the ones that you just hook up to your batteries VIA alligator clips (still considering them) but this is WAY cooler.

anyone have experience with these? or VIAIR compressors in general?

I only getting it for when I air down my tires.... and then have to air them back up again LOL.

VIAIR Corporation - Onboard Air Systems

$290 off amazon prime. not much more than the other pumps i was looking at. this link is for the model that is supposed to support a 35" tire but my 35's are a little skinnier than most so i would probably be fine with the 33" kit

Not the slightest clue, but if you buy the amazon one, install it, and write a little guide, I'll buy it and do the same :p

I installed a compressor for my air bags. I didn't do a tank as it was not really what I need. Here are some pics of how I installed the compressor.

I used an ammo can. I inverted it and left the lid off.

I mounted the compressor inside the can and the regulator on the exterior, along with the electrical components.

I fabbed up some brackets using 1/4" steel plate and some 1/2" bolts (you have to take care with bolts this big as you can crush/distort the frame of you over torque them.) I countersunk holes on the frame side of the brackets that the cab attaches to. Then installed 4 (qty) 1/2" flat head machine bolts to mount the can with.

The pics are a little out of sequence. I installed the air ride 5000 bags and the air ride compressor with wireless control. I installed this last summer. I did the can upside down and open to allow air circulation, and to not allow moisture to accumulate inside. The can provides really good protection from the environment and makes an excellent platform to mount all the parts to.
I just was under the truck changing the oil and fuel filters last weekend and I was really surprised to see that the compressor is clean. Especially after daily driving in snow, ice, rain, and mud ask winter.

I'm very pleased with how I this looks and functions. I think most onboard air compressors would fit in the ammo can I used. But you could easily use a little bigger ammo can if you wanted.

I have a Viair compressor in my Jeep, installed under the hood. It does the job but it's fairly slow airing up 35" tires. The problem with all those compressors is the low cfm, it doesn't matter much that they do 150psi max. The tank helps a bit initially but it's small and once it's depleted you can either continue filling tires at a slow rate or wait until the tank is back up to 140psi. Same difference.

Some of my more hardcore wheeling buddies run modified York AC compressors driven by the engine which allows to run air tools or reseat a tire bead.

Viari compressors R one of the best. I have one on my Harley for my air ride set up. And I just got a 444c for my train horns for my truck.

You must have a small compressor. You can get a tank and compressor to run 200psi all day long. All depends on your tank and compressor you have.

Nice work. This gives me an idea for my air horns I'm doing.

Im actually putting my pump inside one of my floorboard cargo Boxes and drilling a hole through it for the Air line and wiring. The tank is going on the outside along the frame That way the Compressor is protected. I talked to Viair yesterday about doing this they said it since Im only doing a 30% duty cycle it shouldn't be a problem but if I go to fill my tires up to open up the box to let air flow more since it will be prolonged run time.

Viair also recommends only mounting the pump upright as it will help disipate the heat better they claim mounting it upside down will significanlty reduce the life of the compressor not sure how true this is but it makes sense since the heat sinks are at the top of the compressor.

Great idea. I just cant give up that space though. Towing stuff and guns get locked in them.

Yep figured I will use the other side for storage I don't keep much in there anyways my compressor isn't a sealed unit so they told me it's better to make sure the pump stays dry and dust free. Will take some shots when I'm done with it this weekend.

I think iv changed my mind on what my compressor setup is going to be. When you look at the numbers the fill rates are very similar on the OBA systems with the tanks vs just a good pump. The duity cycles are not an issue with the better pumps either, especially with the automatic shutoff when not filling. That alone is a huge savings on the duty cycle of a pump.

I like the 400p and the 440p models. Might go that route.

Here is my VIAIR onboard air system install. I worked with Steven Smith at Timber Grove for the pressure gauge. He told me that I would prefer the digital gauge instead of the dual needle analog gauge. He was right! The top pressure is the tank and the bottom pressure is the ASAM springs.
