Fat Ass OEM Side Steps

I'm a pretty big fellow at 6'3" 375 lbs.

The Longhorn came with OEM steps. I wish there were three mounting spots as the front mount is forward of the door but I try to put my foot as close to the mount as possible.

I have searched the manuals and online and can find no weight capacity for the boards. I did find one post that shows a 2012 quad cab failing but the design has changed.

Any other big boys out there stepping on OEM rails? After driving around in this rig for a week I'm surprised at how far up I'm sitting. I'm level with F250 with big wheels.

Do not quote me... but i would swear the OEM has a 3rd postion in the middle that they just do not put the bracket... I bet all you need to do is get a bracket and the crush nuts and add the 3rd one.

I love the OEM -- let me take a picture tomorrow -- for some reason I thought at one point the put all 3 on.

I'll grab a pic

Doing some more research I've found that OEM are offered in two different flavors;
"Side Step & Wheel to Wheel Side Step" they are both the same length but only the wheel to wheel have three brackets. The installation page covers both models: link
Gonna crawl under the truck tomorrow and see if the tubes have the ability to have a third bracket and if so try to get them added. When you are spending this much on a truck, why do they cheap out on such a little thing like this???

I'm 6'2" and weigh 300lbs and have the oem side steps. Sometimes I feel like I am playing Russian Roulette when I fully step on mine to get in. My dealer told me the weight limit was 350, but who really knows ?

I couldn't imagine the weight limit being less than 400lbs. I would imagine by now somebody would be complaining about it.

Referring to the Wheel to Wheel Steps

I have seen 2 and 3 now. It looks like if it is factory from ~2013 forward it is a crap shoot 2 or 3. As of 15 it looks like all factory are 2. If it is dealer installed it could be 2 or 3 depending on what kit they have in stock...

Still easy enough to get the 3rd bracket. But as stated above that might not be enough. Sell them and find an aftermarket frame mounted unit?

I also noticed something... if it is a 2 step pad wheel to wheel it has 2 brackets. If it is a 3 pad like in the truck above it has 3 brackets. Interesting - cost cutting? New design and an over thought? New design/cost cutting and tested?

ScottFL = 2 pad
DRkNESS = 3 pad

So, now I'm kinda pissed. My window sticker shows "wheel to wheel side steps" and the instruction sheet for both sets show the wheel to wheel as having three brackets: link
I was gonna call the dealer and tell them I want another bracket, but I just crawled under there and the are no holes for a third bracket just the fore and aft setup.
I guess I'll just have to see how these hold up because there is no way I'm getting into this monster without stepping on the rails.

I still may reach out to the dealer and state that the wrong steps were installed at the factory when looking at the window sticker and see what they say, or maybe RamCares will see this post, is there a way to send a link to RamCares?

Maybe a little exaggeration....

My last few rides were mid sized SUV's and they were rated at 5000# and I just checked the rating of the only V8 model I could think of and that is the Jeep G.C. and it is rated at 7200#

BUT, the only thing I'll probably ever stick in that hitch receiver is the bar bed extender to bring home lumber or take my kayak out. If I were planning on towing I would have bought a truck with a 3.92 rear end or better yet a real truck like a 2500 or 3500 Cummins with the Longhorn package; saw one yesterday and wow was that nice.

This is a luxury car with a huge trunk that can be hosed out. The Longhorn has REAL leather seats and REAL wood all over the place, it is quiet, fast and has an enormous range with the 32 gallon tank. I'm still on my first tank at 350 miles and still have a quarter of a tank left and from what I read that is probably more like 1/3 because the system is still calibrated for the 26. The EVIC is currently showing 17.6 MPG but that was with a lot of idling the first couple of days getting everything set up and learning the truck.

So, I have a luxury car that I can go hunting with and through a pig carcass in the back or drive on the beach with the wife and have a secure huge trunk when the tonneau cover gets here this week and best of all I got a huge discount as I bought it last week as a left over 2016 model with 13 miles on the clock, so yeah I'm real happy that my luxury car can tow almost 8000#...:favorites13:

Hi ScottFL,

We would recommend contacting your local dealership for further assistance, they will be able to take a closer look at the sales' codes on your vehicle and identify what steps should have been installed at the factory. If you have any additional questions or concerns feel free to PM our page with your VIN and let us know!

Mine is a 2014 2500 Longhorn with wheel to wheel steps. Has 2 pads, 3 mounts.

I apologize... I meant no offense. And I agree with this post. I started with an Express Ram and now I am in a Fancy Pants Ram because I could not be outdone by my Wife's Overland :)
