Has anyone changed the bolts on their fender flares. Due to the awesome winters here in Massachusetts and I'm guessing the lack of stainless steel washers smittybilt uses my flares have rust spots where all of the washers sit. I have tried to clean it off but it's looking like I'm going to have to sand it and re paint them. What should I use instead of the washes that came. I was think maybe a rubber or even plastic washer. 49b78bb4366d73a6650a52cc2b77988d.jpg

I would try a mix of baking soda and vinegar along with a magic eraser first.

try the rubber washer option

I went to fastenal and they gave me a better grade stainless that also has a rubber backing. Was the only washer that would fit the bolt without a lot of play.

This is the aftermath of some water and baking soda with a magic eraser plus new washers and new rubber gasket.

Let me ask this. Do you actually drill each bolt in to your fender ? Or is it for show and held on my 3m auto tape ?

There is no drilling or 3m tape. It uses the screws that hold on your inner fender well. The rubber trim, black edge on my flares, is what sits against the paint. It does cause minor rub into the clear coat but all bolt on look flares cause this. The smaller oem style ones use 3m tape and do not rub on surface. Most people like myself once they put theses style flares on will keep them on. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. That helps. I wasn't really wanting to drill holes. Lol.

Mine are made by tyger. Check amazon 2500 flares. They look better on the 1500s. I painted them to match myself. Very heavy and much cheaper than bushwhacker. They use the same rubber seal as mentioned above. The bolts are for show

No man! Zoom in on the pic and look at the black seal going around the flare where it touches the truck. That keeps dirt out and puts something between the flare and the paint. They bolt on underneath where your inner fender bolts to the metal fender. No drilling at all.
