What do you guys think? It's a universal battery tray from summit. I drilled two holes in it and mounted it to existing holes in the frame with two grade 8 3/8" bolts. The battery weighs 46lbs. I added the ratchet strap just for piece of mind. I realize it's close to the exhaust and I've decided to add some heat shield. The heat shield says it's rated for 400F direct contact or 2000F radiant heat. Opinions? It's a second battery for camping in the bed, it'll be hooked up with a battery combiner. Going to drive it around a week before I wire it up, just in case I were to drag it down the street....

36 views and no comments? Tensile strength of the 3/8" bolts is 11xxx lbs Think the weight of the battery will tear the steel tray at a nasty pothole? Bueller?

I get the heat part, optima yellow tops can be mounted in any orientation though. Think the heat shielding will be enough? I can't see it getting any hotter than the one in the engine bay? It should be nicely ventilated too.

I think you will be ok with a good heat shield. Batteries live by an engine all day long. Nice idea.

Ram HD's can run dual batteries. With a different intake setup ,you might be able to use the stock dual battery trays.

I like the idea! Looks like it was very thought out. I agree with the heat shield to protect the battery. I think everything will be fine.

Looks good, I mounted a battery in the rear awhile back. I did it to move weight to the rear, and lighten up the front.

All I would do in your case, is add a heat shield

I'll make a write up once it's all put together. I took it all out to paint the tray and add heat shielding. Hopefully it'll be all wired up by thursday or so.

Are you not worried about mud or sticks... Things of that nature? I ask because you said it's for camping so I'm assuming the truck will be going off road.

Not enough to hurt it, I'm going to mount a terminal cover eventually. Got the battery remounted tonight with heat shield. Drove around in 95F heat and the battery was still cool to the touch. Hoping to have it wired up by thursday night.
