While parking to go to the movies tonight my son gets out of the back seat, steps in the paint factory step and bang it hits the ground. WTF!! I've heard this was an issue but I can't find the thread, what can I do to fix this? Is there a frame bracket I can buy?

My factory steps are stout. Maybe check all the bolts? Could they have been installed improperly?

I don't know about improperly, I had some movement in my driver side step a few weeks back so I got under the and tightened them, had no issue and no movement until yesterday when it just dropped. The bolts and nuts are still on the steps. The whole thing just pulled out. I'll take pictures today.

Could rust have been an issue? You have an '11 model according to your bio and live in NH. I assume you get a lot of snow and therefore salt on the roads.

Hate to hear that, let see those pics.

So I didn't have time to snap the pictures before taking it to the shop. just got off the phone and they tell me that the only way to salvage those steps is to weld some plate on there and then refasten. The rocker panel is too tore up to just put back on. rough estimate for the repair is $3-400 for that side with making plates. I'm wondering now if it's better to just find some steps that mount to the frame. Being that it's the Longhorn edition and has the painted to match steps, will it looks stupid without those and go with something else?

I have the same issue happen yesterday to my 2013. step just tore out of metal frame with no warning issues. RAM should fix this problem for free due to poor design and being a safety issue for everyone that owns these! I had the same estimate for reattaching these. $3-500.00 and needs done at a body shop. Anyone have any luck in calling RAM to get them to fix this issue when it happens?? Maybe need to threaten with a law suit to get something done.

I ended up having the garage just weeks that bracket to the rocker panel without making any plates. They told me there was more surface area to weld on to don't that way and got past where the rust was in the rocker. Once I got it back it was night and day difference. No more sag when I stepped on it and much much cheaper repair than buying new plates or having them fabricated.

I'm sorry, I don't. I traded the truck not long after the repair on a new 2018. Basically they just removed the mounting plates off the rocker panel and welded the bracket directly too the rocker.
Do you have pics of this repair?
