Hey guys!

Looking for opinions and pictures? I currently have a 2012 RAM 1500 Big Horn Quad Cab, 6’4” box 4x4 truck. It has the stock 20” 275/60/R20 wheels with the stock Goodyear Wranger HP’s on them. They are the original tires with 62k on them and are coming up for replacement here!

I was planning on putting a small all around lift on it as such: 2009-2016 Dodge Ram 1500 4WD 3.5" F + 3" R Leveling Lift Kit w/ Compressor Tool | eBay

I am going to get BF Goodrich ALL Terrains T/A KO2’s

17” OEM wheel stock size = 265/70-17
20” OEM wheel stock size = 275/60-20

I know from my old 2010 RAM I had that with a 3” lift I can easily fit 33” tires as I had mud tires on it. Here is the price breakdown for everything for just the tires delivered. I was going to purchase some 17” OEM wheels to get the size down as the tires are cheaper. I can get 4 OEM wheels for $175.

1) Original size 275/60R20 - $1004.96
2) Slightly wider and taller 285/65R20 - $1460.40 (OUCH)
3) 17” wheel size 285/70R17 - $873.20 + $175 = $1048.20 – Secures the future for cheaper tire replacements down the road!
4) Last option is to find wider wheels that would accommodate the stock Hummer size of 315/70/17. I have a feeling those wheels would cost a TON of money though… That is $1021.76 + whatever wheels I’d need to get.

Thoughts on putting a tire as wide as a 285 on a 265 stock 17” wheel? Pictures of such?

Thanks guys! :)

Your stock 17" wheels should be a 5 lug, 17 x 7 sized wheel with 25.4mm offset.

Tire manufactures recommend a minimum wheel width of 7.5". I suspect that a 285 will fit just fine on a 7" rim and won't pop the bead unless you are out bouncing it across large rocks.

However, I also suspect that you may experience some rub on the inside at full steering lock. If that happens, just get some spacers. Thickness of the spacers could range from 6mm to 10mm depending on tire inflation and sidewall tread depth.

You really think it will rub? There are people on this forum showing 35" tires on 2" leveling kits. I'm doing 3.5" front x 3" in rear. FWIW: I had a 3" level on my 2010 RAM 2 door, 8' bed and they didn't rub at all with 33x12.5x17

Check this out: 33inch or 35inch tire? '14 Ram 1500 - TexasBowhunter.com Community Discussion Forums - half way down - post by RascalArms - Black RAM with 2" level.

I talked to my usual guy at Discount Tire and he said that 7.5" wide rims are needed. I'm trying to find out if they are 7 or 7.5" (Me thinks they are 7.5") and he said you can go all the way to 12.5 (Or 315).

5) I found another option: 35x12.5R17 for $1125.76

Don't get me wrong, I can stick with 33" tires here but if I can safely fit a 35" tire on there without causing any issues I would rather do that.

Thanks!

this is crap. dont buy this.

i would suggest figuring out what size wheel you want to run. then take it from there. flip flopping between wheel sizes gets very confusing. my personal opinion is that a 34" tire looks the best on a leveled 1500. 275/65/20 are very reasonably priced and wont require the purchase of new wheels.

All (Especially DannyMK2),

Update: I've decided on getting the traditional sized 35x12.5/R20 and keep the 20" rims I have and not get the 17" ones as the guy got back to me on the 17" rims and they are only 7" wide. My 20" rims are 9" wide which will make for a better fit on the E-rated 35x12.5's

With that being said:

Can anyone confirm with a 3" lift if 35x12.5/R20's will fit without rubbing without any spacers? Also, DannyMK2, what do you recommend? I'm fine spending a bit more as this is my daily driver and I'd be willing to invest in something better if you know it's worth it :) I'm 99% sure it'll work cuz this guy here did 2" and it fit with his OEM 20" wheels: http://www.ram1500diesel.com/forum/...39-new-35x12-5r20-federal-mt-tires-truck.html

Thanks again for your time everyone!

bilstein 5100's for the level. 35x12.5 on stock wheels are most likely going to rub on tight turns without spacers.

I have that tire size with RC's 3 inch lift. It rubs pretty bad in both directions.

Do you have a Big Horn? I ask because the big horns have the 9" rims to begin with, not the 8" rims. I think it should be fine.

Let me know please. I just ordered the 3" all around lift and am getting ready to go order the tires shortly here.

Thanks!

Something might be wrong... I mean I HONESTLY thought about leaving them on longer to about 70K but they are awful now when it rains. FWIW I have to put my truck in 4WD Auto when it rains because they are pretty bad. Not bald by any stretch but bad. I have 2 young kids too. Ain't worth it lol.

Thanks!

You must be 1 of the lucky ones , I've had 4 rams so far and all have had the HP or SRA and I've always been ready for tires in the high 20k range no joke ..

FWIW: They recommend 35 PSI and I've always ran them higher at 38 - 40 PSI. Not sure if that helps but these tires lasted a long time. If I went back to a street tire I'd buy the HP's again! :). Ohh and I only rotated them every 30,000 miles too... Some say that is neglect... I've never had issues.

You can fit 35x12.50x20 with a leveling kit on stock wheels. You have to run a 7mm spacer in the front to clear upper ball joint. You cant run mudflaps either. So with 3" your setup will work just watch the spacing between tire and ball joint.

I just looked at the upper ball joint before you even said this and yes, I can see that without a spacer there is no way a 12.5" tire will fit. So with that I did measure and do the math and 7mm isn't enough. 7mm = .275" and I only have about half an inch to begin with. I think you're talking about just a spacer that's like a large washer right? Discount tire said the lug nuts need a minimum of 7 turns for them to mount/install the 35" tires so I think a big washer/spacer is out of the question.

Basic math shows that my tires now are 10.8" - 12.5" = new width = 1.7" wider divided by 2 = .85" extra per side right? I think 7MM would work for sure but I almost feel like it's too close for comfort there... If one of the front tires gets a little low on air for some reason it'll rub then... That and I run 15 lbs in the sand dunes and I know that'll be a problem without the larger off-set... Is my thinking right here??

Here is what I was thinking:

I'm trying to find a 1" hub-centric one but I only am finding 1.5" ones 4 Pc 2012-2017 Dodge Ram 1500 Hub Centric Wheel Spacers 1.50 Inch # 5550CHC1415 | eBay

Thoughts?

I really appreciate everything here guys! :) Can't wait to post pictures when it's all done!!!! :)

I got hubcentric spacers made and they worked perfectly. I'll attach some pictures when I get a second.

I think I might just do this instead of deal with the spacers...

I can get 285/65/R20 BFGoodrich AT's like I want. That ends up being 34.6" tall, 11.2" wide (So only .4" wider total) instead of getting the 35x12.5 tires.

I know I'm kinda all over the place here but this is part of the learning curve :) The lift is ordered so that's gonna happen no matter what. I just don't want wheel spacers. I'd rather go with a skinnier and slightly shorter tire.

Thanks!
