Plasti dip is great if you are looking for a flat non smooth finish. You can add the glossifier but it's still not a smooth finish, but I will say that plasti Dip holds up a lot better than paint and clear.

Just hold off and focus on another project. DIY stock wheels always look cheap.

If you have this style of chrome clad then you can get wheel skins that are black and look really nice installed.

Dip it. It's easy and if you don't like you peel it off and your wheels look fine. Paint is a nightmare. You have to scuff up the wheels, prime, paint, and clear. It's also tends to chip and peel if you don't do it right.
I dipped the wheels to my mustang. It's been 6 months and they still look good.

Why not look to trade with someone who has the painted rims? Much better chance of success and good results painting a painted rim. Just saying?
