Soooo another rust repair thread... I just bought a 2014 Ram 1500. When I brought it home I noticed some rust bubbles on the drivers side front qurterpanel near the hemi logo.

I popped the hood and noticed that the rusting seemed to be coming from the inside and rusting out. I was happening right along the vibration dampener on the inside of the panel, which seems to be a pretty common thing I guess.

So I brought the truck back to the dealer and told them about the rust. They took pictures and submitted them to Chrysler, who of course would not do anything about it. However, the dealership said they would have it fixed for
me, free of charge.

Anyway, I got the truck back and it seems like all the dealership did was sand down the rust bubbles and re paint. You can still see where the bubbles used to be through the new paint. I don't understand why they did not replace the panel as I told them it was rusting from the inside out and I'm pretty sure what they did will only end up being a temporary fix.

Does anybody here know if they may have done something to prevent or stop future rusting? Or will this be something I'll have to deal with again later?

Hi french fri25,

Was there any indication on the invoice provided to you about the extent of the repair?

Some of the additional information you need to supply is what State do you live, has there been previous damage (body) to vehicle, how many miles is on truck and as already asked, what exactly does work sheet from dealer say in regard to work done for repair.

How would you repair these front fenders especially in that area , when that material or mesh is bonded on the backside of the front fenders for structural rigidly and is pretty much impossible to remove short of a jackhammer

I would demand full front fender replacement especially under the corrosion warranty of a three year old truck

So I live in New York. And the damage is coming from right where the vibration dampening panel is on the inside of the quarter panel. I even explained this to the people in the service department and the guy I spoke to said that they would most likely replace the whole fender, which is what I was hoping they would do.

However, all they did was buff out the bubbles on the surface and paint over it. And now the bubbles are already reappearing only a couple weeks later. So I'm pretty upset with the dealership for telling me what needed to be done to repair it, and then only doing some quick patch work.

But as far as I know they are the original quarter panels.

Also, there are only 30k miles on the truck so I'm surprised I'm having to deal with this kind of damage already.

Since the vehicle was bought used, did you check for any issues on the carfax report of previous accident damage? Of course that report is not always 100% correct, but may help if dealer knew it was in an accident and didn't disclose it.

Did you follow up with the dealership to let them know the issue has returned?

I just replaced my driver's side front fender due to rusting as well. Dirt and material got up under the fender and rusted it from the inside out.
Mine is an 09 so there is a lot more time involved, I'm surprised you have to do this already on a 14.

My dealer replaced my left front fender for this same issue under warranty. My truck is a '14 that had 20,000mi on it when the bubbles appeared. When the body shop sanded down the bubbles to bare metal there were rust holes all the way through the metal. My truck has been oilbath rustproofed every year since new and still rusted. My dealer stated it has seen this many times and is because the sound deadener on the back side of the fender traps moisture and causes the rust. Not happy, but the dealer did a great job fixing the problem.

Alright, now you got my attention. A 3 year old Ram with rust thru already? That in no way is acceptable. Did you get some pics? I can't even believe They attempted a repair instead of a replacement part.

So yeah, I just called the dealership and told them the bubbles returned. And they were like, "already?" Which obviously means they knew that what they did was not a permanent repair. And that kind of ticked me off a little. Basically they said I would just have to bring the truck back in yet again to talk to the warranty person and send photos into Chrysler. Same exact drill as last time. And I'm honestly not happy about it. I think it's come time where I might just go down there and talk to a supervisor about this.

This is a common problem on 4th gen Rams, the only way your going to fix it is to replace the fender.
