Hello everyone,

I'm not sure if this falls under general discussion, but I have a problem with my spare tire. I bought this truck used and it seems as thought the spare tire under the rear is locked. The key looks to be a general key of some type. It is not a star pattern like key. I tried using my regular key to the truck itself and no such luck. I'm stuck on what to do next other than call a dealer. What do you think? The brand of the lock is Winchlock by Motive.

A universal lock key should work... better known as a cut off wheel. Or find a good locksmith.

how long have you owned the truck. I would go back to the dealer and have them contact the previous owner or have them cut it off

Hi Ecker05,

If you decide to visit your local dealership for further diagnosis I'd be happy to follow up with them for you if needed. Just PM our page with your VIN and let me know!

I have a 2013 Ram 1500 and I think Ialso have the same issue. I bought the truck about a year ago and now need to use the spare. There is a lock with a star shape end at the end of the white cone. I called the dealer and they can service it (cut it off) then replace it for $150. I don’t have the key of card with a serial number to have a duplicate sent to me. Any ideas on how to get the spare off without spending $150 or the use of a key that can’t be ordered using the VIN?

That one is the Mopar spare tire lock(I added it to mine). It is made by McGard just like the Mopar wheel locks and it's not linked to your VIN. You might be able to drill it out as it uses sort of a wedge lock as behind that plastic cone.
Did you check the winch handle as it clips on to the end?

There was nothing there. I search the truck top to bottom. I don’t have very much room to drill it out but will try on my next day off. Thanks for your input.

Crash68,

That worked.

I called McGard and they were able to locate and ship me the key only using a picture. Thanks for the information and input, without it I would still be trying to cut off the lock. They key with shipping was about $22 and change.

Thanks again.
