VisionX light cannon 4.5" review

Hello Ram Forum and "googlers." I have been wanting to do this for awhile. I like off road lighting, in particular LED lighting, and I want to share my impressions. All photos are taken with my iPhone 6.

Here is the box. When I got this in the mail. I was stoked. I opened it up... And pulled this out....

Here is a link to visionx website for the 4.5" lights.

I took a screen shot of the technical info.....

Oh my, my battery is dead.
Visionx claims per light:
1,000 feet of usable light. Which means, at least from what I read, "usable light" is being able to read a newspaper. So, VX claims, at 1,000 feet out, you can still read a newspaper with the available light.
Also, with two lights, VX claims 5,000 "raw lumens" at $449.00 for a pair. That is $449.00 before tax and shipping. I got in on a forum group buy by a vender called "alternative off road" and paid $415.00 (including tax and shipping) to land on my door step. Sweeeeet!!

Visionx offers 3 sizes for their light cannons.

(Found on a google image search)

Install was fairly easy. I have mounted KC lights before and Rigid industries lights also. I would say, the Rigid industries harness is much more simple. The Visionx light cannon harness had a bit more wires going on. It was similar to a KC harness. I wish it was a tad bit more user friendly like the Rigid Industries harness. But, I am no electrical engineer and I have never designed lights for NASA. Like VisionX. So, I trust their judgement and the light cannons have a HUGE following for a reason.

For install, follow this awesome video someone took the time to create. Helped me a ton. Thank you. Link below by Realtruck.com

Up next, photos..... I mean, that is why we are here right hahaha.

Above: Ram 1500 Laramie LOW beam head lights pointing at a brick wall. As you can see, remember this through out, off road lights perform amazing when it is absolutely pitch black out. So, this parking lot is less than ideal because of the parking lot lights and cars driving by. But, I use this wall to help aim my lights. Works great :)

With out further ado, above, Visionx 4.5" light cannon. I pointed them up on purpose. I wanted to showcase that intense spot and any flood that bleeds off. Low beams are turned off.

You can see by the above photo, there is some lights that projects in front of the truck. It is honestly not enough "flood" because these lights are designed to be a 10 degree spot pattern.

Perfect for blinding vampires lol.

Photo #1 is the light that is bleeding off that 10 degree spot pattern. #2 is the light bleeding off my VisionX XPR 24" light bar w/ lights cannons. As you can see, you HAVE to have a dedicated spot pattern but you also need an overall flood/ spot combo to light everything else all around you. I think my set up complements each other great. Here is a link to my VisionX XPR review.

Above: 2 4.5" light cannons and an XPR 12m. Also, I have not quite aimed all three beams. Have them separated. You we see the XPR provides a great spot also.

VisionX light cannon 4.5" review

What is nice about the light cannon is the covers. You can chose colored covers. Also, filter covers to break apart the 10 degree spot. You can turn that spot into a flood beam, euro, etc. I figure, these covers won't work for me because a get great flood with my XPR light bar. But, what kind of review would this be if I didn't mention them.

Only thing about the light cannons I don't like is the lack of mount options. Go on Rigid industries website and they have a ton of mounting options for their lights. The light cannon just have a base stand. That's it.
4f32c31234914f781e62e98fb452acb5.jpg
All you have is the base. So, in my case, I have some 5" holes in my custom steel bumper to mount lights.
2a39b17d9834e8db5138c3d87ca6a16b.jpg
4.5" reflector + the housing + the base, pushes the light 5.75" inches tall. That means about half an inch of reflector is blocked by steel when you factor in the 5" light holes. I reached out to visionx via email and got nothing back for mounting alternatives.

d3cd2ece11cf4b92969513328f82e352.jpg
For example (incase VX stumbles across this): rigid industries Dually mounts would have been perfect. If VX can find a way to also mount their cannons this way it would open more mounting opportunities for people with tight mounting tolerances. Plus, VX lights cannon is advertised as a 4.5". I had rigid dually's mounted in their XL version but I wanted round lights for my round 5" bumper holes. Plus, I love my XPR and decided I will only run VX products.

I hate to end a review with a negative comment in regards to mount options. However, honestly, these lights are very bright and you will not be disappointed. The lights feels rock solid in my hands and VX had a great reputation right along side other high end companies. A ton of people run these lights and I am proud to say I do to. I highly recommend. More photos to follow in the near future. Thanks for reading.

Hahaha I was going out to the desert. I stopped at my infamous wall (seen in photos) to aim my lights and get some shots. Annnnnd, my daughter threw up in my truck lol. So, I took her home and decided to save those photos for another night :D

The desert.

IMO

Only thing, I want a back drop, other than a hillside. I might park a car 1000' out, or, try and find some Joshua's trees. Something to catch the light.

I am interested in the findings. Of course, it will reflect in this review unbiased. This weekend I will drive out. Before I go, I will probably use a football field to get a walking pace count (shoutout to the Army vets) to measure distance and go from there.

Lol.. The average brisk stride is 3'

3' in a yard.

So 100 brisk strides is 100 yards

So do that 10 times, bring gatoraid. Or borrow a range finder.

I don't have an average stride. I come from a tall family. I am 6'10". I don't remember my pace count from back in the day. Either way, I get those photos up bro. As accurate as I can. :D

VisionX light cannon 4.5" review

Got some more photos tonight. Randomly.

Above: no head lights. Just a shot of the scene and available lighting
1eca03cdb77adbd3f0d879cda1a67469.jpg
Above: Two VisionX 4.5" light cannons. Zoom in on the photo and you can easily see the back wall behind the tree.

Above: Head lights off. Just a shot of the scene and available lighting.
3adc8869beb409df4e228cf5cd9275eb.jpg
Above: Two VisionX 4.5" light cannons. Shining through a chain link fence (blocking some light), over a dirt running track with a soccer field in the middle, up a hill and reflecting easily off the side of that building. Maybe 1000', not sure, but heck, gotta be pretty close. I will get a better 1000' shot one of these days.

Stay tuned.

Revisited this wall, backed up a bit more, aimed both light cannons correctly. Not too bad.

Aimed my VisionX XPR 12m also. Look at how much more intense and focus the spot pattern is from the light cannons. However, the XPR still performs well too.

VisionX light cannon 4.5" review

So, this is a continuation of my initial review. I picked up some Light cannon filter covers. I selected the "Euro" beam pattern. I have a post from earlier that explains all the filters. Just scroll up (post #4) and check out the options. Also explains the Euro cover.

I have two Euro covers. Just one shown in the above photo.

I used a green background to show the inside portion. It has actual raised grooves and pattern in the lens to reflect the beam pattern.

Glows in the dark lol. I took this photo screwing around with my flashlight. Not sure what to make of that feature. At $20 a lens. I would rather skip out on this feature for a cheaper cost. But, whatever.

It is not dark yet, stay tuned, I will post a YouTube review when the sun goes does. First ever to demonstrate. Should be fun.
