I was looking through some pics I had and it occurred to me that I have not seen this option on other builds, maybe it was just covered up by your mat but looks like a neat place to do something with. Any ideas? ;) Other than the obvious, I can attest that it keep beers, I mean soda cold for at least 24 hours without having to add ice.

Guess I'm going to have to flip the floor mats up tomorrow to see if my crew cab has these...

I think they have been standard on crew cabs since '09, my '11 3500 has them, and it is just an ST.

They were a "selling feature" at the dealership I went to for my truck.

"You can fit a 6-pack of bottles and a small bag of ice in each one, perfect for weekend road-trips with the guys. Or, you know, whatever."

Anybody drill a hole in the bottom for a water drain?

they are removable tubs, you can just pull it out and dump the water out easily

^this

My '11 2500 CC ST has them as well.

...what it didn't have was an upper glove box...fixed that though.

Yes.... and while someone pointed out you could just pull them out and drain them it's much nicer to just let the melted ice drain out. I drilled two holes on opposite side/ends just to keep road spray from coming back in (not that much would anyway) and it works perfectly. The only downside is when there is water dripping from under the back seat area of my truck I sometimes have to admit I have beer on ice with me :) And sometimes have to share :) :)

6 bottles or cans and about 3/4 of a 7lb bag of ice fit nicely. At 75 degrees the ice generally melts after about 6 hours. At 95 degrees it's more like 3 hours.

The ice lasts much longer without the holes.

I may try wrapping the removable bucket with insulation tape next year.

That might make it too tight to fit down the storage well. Some people have suggested putting some insulation around the bin under the truck. I'm not sure if that wouldn't produce some more wind noise unless done very smoothly.

If you really want to get creative you could drill the holes halfway up the side to allow some water to sit in the bottom. I did a similar thing with a drain hose attached to a cooler in my RV. I just raise/lower the drain hose depending on how much liquid I want to let collect. It's super nice to not have to pull the cooler out to dump the water out. Just keep throwing in more ice and beverages.

I had also thought of insulating but can't think of what would hold up to all the water spray and wind. It would probably have to be something with a hard shell that attaches to the outside of the bin. At that point it becomes more trouble than I'm into.

What about that spray in expanding foam that people use for filling in cavities to prevent rattling and/or make the vehicle more sound-proof?
Give the removable tub's outside a good greasing with vaseline or STL or Jet-Lube or something along those lines so the foam doesn't stick to the tub, then spray in the foam and let it sit and harden, then remove the tub and fill in any cavities/air-pockets in the foam. That should produce a perfectly form-fitted insulation without having to worry about it being too snug.

the tubs on the underside of the truck are insulated, it looks like that spray on foam stuff so there would be no way to insulate the outside of it, honestly though its not that big of a deal to add ice to it to keep it cold lol. If it keeps **** cold for 6 hours, thats more than enough time i think. If you are on a road trip just have to swap the ice at your next gas up
