do 100% of rams that have the 8 speed have the knob?

i was looking at possibly getting into a newer ram than the 2010 I have now. I was under the impression that if it had an 8 speed, no matter what, it had a shift knob. were the 5/6 speeds have the column or console shifter. but i've seen a few ram sports that claim to have the 8 speed but they have a console shifter instead. I was wondering if maybe in certain models, such as the sport, that they can have the 8 speed without the knob

Suppsedly they will be going back to a conventional console mounted shifter for the 2019 model

All 8 speed have the knob. If it is a column or console shift it is a 5/6 speed.

Like everyone said, the knob is the only shifter for the 8 speed. I'm guessing the trucks you're seeing are 13s. A 13 could have either transmission depending on when it was built, and that's probably confusing the listing system a lot of dealers use. For 14+ you had an option of which you wanted on the lower trim HEMI trucks like the Express, but I believe all Sports, Laramies, etc. were 8 speeds at that point.

If your only choice you could get was the shifter knob, would this be a yes/no criteria for moving to a newer model?

It would be a resounding yes. The 8 speed is leaps and bounds better then the 6 speed. That is not to knock the 6 speed as it wasn't bad at all in my old 2012, but after having moved up to an 8 speed in a newer truck I can say it's a better transmission. The shifts, the power delivery, etc are just better. Now, in earlier trucks there were some shifting issues that was mostly resolved by a computer update. I think most people get hung up on the knob (which IMHO I would prefer an actual column shift) but to get the better transmission i'll gladly put my truck in drive with the knob.

Even if RAM was to switch back to a column or console "shifter" for the transmission, it will still be a shift by wire like the 8 speed trans now.

I thought the knob was model year specific? FWIW my '14 Sport has the 8 speed and the knob.

I enjoy the center console space it saves and I don't really care for column shifters.

I was concerned as well, but I rented a Durango and after my trip, I decided that I like it. You get used to it quick.
