With my winch install almost finished, I decided to start working on a lockable insert for my console.
This is just a prototype so I can work out all the little details.
I'm just not sure if I want to stick with the "hinged door" design, or just make a kind of "false bottom" that locks into place.

That's cool!! I'm not sure which version I would go with, either. Almost leaning toward the hinged door. I know there are "safes" available for our trucks, already, but they want $200-$250 for the one I looked at. Probably not a bad price for a little security, but more than what I'm willing to spend. :D

Yes, the price was my problem with the pre-made ones as well. Especially considering that I have an abundance of 16 gauge steel (that's what most of the available ones are made of), and the ability to make my own.

As I mentioned above, this one is just a prototype. Once I finalize the design, I'll use this one as a pattern for the final one, which will be made from steel, and without rivets.

I have the gun safe that replaces one of the coolers in the back floor. They're pretty cool

Need to pul it out for paint, but I got version 1.2 built using 16gage.
Overall, the fit and function is good, but I need to build a press brake. The sheet metal brake that I have just wasn't working for the internal bends. I had to go old school with a hammer and anvil.
Also, a single layer of 16g was a little flimsy for the lid, so I spot welded some reinforcement pieces to the under side.

However, the way I made this, it's just secured to the inside of the factory plastic console with 4 screws. It's not as secure as a full "safe", but I figure it's slightly better than a factory locking glove box, and way better than nothing at all.
