I know this has probably been discussed but I haven't read too far into it yet. I bought a 2017 2500 with the 5.7 hemi a couple weeks ago and since day one it's had an exhaust tick. Almost sounds like a very small exhaust leak. My 2013 1500 with the 5.7 developed the same kind noise after 20k miles or so. The 2017 2500 has done it since I got it new from the dealership. Anyone know how I can track down this noise on my own? Or is it just supposed to sound like that? It's not loud or anything you'd hear and thing "wow something is really wrong" it just irritates me. Thanks for any suggestions!

Are you sure it's actually an exhaust leak? Not just a hemi tick?

A 5.7 in a 2500 is a little louder compared to a 5.7 in a 1500, then there is the 6.4, that things a noisy beast in a 2500.

I would have your dealer look at it and possibly ask to compare to another truck.

Could you post a video and I'll have a listen?

Yes, video if possible.

If anything, you could take it back to dealer but they'd probably tell ya it's normal.

No I'm not sure it's an exhaust leak, that's just what I'm guessing. I've never heard of the "hemi tick" before but that could be it I guess cuz it's definitely a ticking sound. I will try to get a video sometime this week for you to check out!

One inch plastic hose, put one side to ear, one side to each exhaust bolt. Yes post video, hopefully it isn't lifter tick.

If this new truck already has warped exhaust manifolds (Broke Studs) right from the factory I would take this truck back!

Hopefully it's just a set of loud injectors.

A good detailed video would help.

Question: Does it have this sound all the time?
start up cold / operating temp idle / operating temp higher rpms ?
Or
Only on cold start ups then goes away after operating temps have been reached?

Hi sticknstring,

If you do decide to visit the dealership with your 2500 and need any assistance, let us know!

If you want to track the noise down you can use a vehicle stethoscope. I just used one on my Coronet to track down a bad lifter.

Should be $10 at your local parts store.

If it goes away when warm its exhaust. If it doesn't it might still be, but could be deeper in the engine.

Its under warranty, make it the dealer's problem

I'll get a video in the next couple days. Hopefully it doesn't have to go to the dealer. Closest one is 60 miles and that's a lot of gas for them to say "oh that's normal"

My passanger side had 4 broken bolts. My right side has a few for sure, I bought a pair of shorty headers (JBA) from moes as a replacement for the crappy warping manifolds, just want to get them coated first.

Here's what I've learned so far.
Can't hear it at idle. Even with the hood up.
I've only heard it from inside the truck, above about 1250 rpm and semi-hard to hard acceleration. Sounds like it comes from pass never side rear of the engine OR underneath front passenger. Somewhere in that area.
Haven't been able to have somebody rev it up while I'm listening under the hood

It does make the ticking at cold startup for a short very short time but I think that's different and probably normal.
