I have a 2011 Ram 5.7 Hemi that I bought used a year ago. When I bought it, it had a tick to it but wasn't bad. Just within the past couple weeks ot got a lot worse. It lost power, mpg went down, and was dying when I turned the wheel while idling. I took it to a local service shop and was told it was it was internal so I had it towed to my local Dodge dealer where I was told it was the cam and a seized lifter. Lucky for me I bought a powertrain warranty. My question is, has anybody had this problem and had it fixed and it come back again? Thanks for your help.

YES!! I had the same thing happen to my 2011 with about 75k miles on it. Tore my engine all apart. The cam had lobes cut into it and one or two lifters seized up. When mine happened I punched it to get on the highway and it started very violently shaking and my check engine light started flashing. Got it taken care of under warranty, they said the engine was super gummed up and asked if I changed the oil which I do with full synthetic every 3-5k miles. Trucks totally stock. I have almost 98k miles now with zero issues. Please let me know what the dealership says caused it!

There is a trend with Ram trucks and guys who ignore lifter tick. Big repairs are in your future. Cautionary tale, I take no comfort in saying so.

Lucky you with warranty, congrats. Just make sure it isn't ticking when you get it back, likely be a new cam and lifter/rollers. If it is ticking when fixed, visit the syn oil thread.

JUST fyi, your cam spins and hits the roller on the bottom of the lifter when the lobes hit the top of the rotation. If the lifter is sticky for a number of reasons, either the cam lobe smooths or the roller smashes. The old adage, something has to give, well something downstream has to give if there is a problem upstream. IE at the lifters. The roller can take some lifter stick, that is what it is there for and why they put a roller there. The most important thing is a proper operating PCV valve, after that you can look at oils. High detergency oil like PUP can keep that area cleaner then other oils, or high moly redline can keep that lifter smoothly running. I fixed my lifter tick with redline as many guys on the board.

I had the same issue on my 2011 with only 50,000 miles, dealer fixed it and its been running fine since. I now have nearly 90,000 miles. I now use nothing but amsoil premium oil.
