As I was driving home from work yesterday, my truck dinged and the check engine light came on showing P0463 Fuel Level Sensor Circuit High Input. Moments later, I lost my fuel gauge completely. When I got home, I shut the truck down and restarted to see if it was just a fluke - nope still no fuel gauge. I put the code reader on it and it confirmed the P0463. I looked up the code and found this:

"The fuel level sensor (sender) is located in the fuel tank usually integral to the fuel pump module. Usually they cannot be replaced without replacing the fuel pump module, though there are exceptions. There is a float attached to an arm that travels along a resistor which is grounded to the tank, frame or has a dedicated ground circuit. Voltage is supplied to the sender and the ground path changes according to fuel level. How much voltage depends on the system but 5 volts isn't uncommon."

I tried disconnecting the battery to see if that give me anything but that didn't work either. So I took my truck straight to the gas station and filled my tank up to make sure I had gas. After starting my truck again at the gas station, my fuel gauge came back but I still have a CEL. I looked into some possible causes and noticed something that caught my eye:

"Less likely is the possibility that the PCM, BCM, or Fuel pump computer module has failed"

Although it says "less likely", I think this may be a viable source for the issue. About 2 months or so ago, I had my truck inspected at a local service shop and when I picked it up, my outside temp was malfunctioning. I took it back and they put my truck on their computer and it gave a code U0140 Lost Communication with Body Control Module. They told me to get it to RAM asap as this can cause a lot of headaches with my electrical system. I took it into the dealer and let them know what happened. They told me there was nothing wrong with the BCM because the code had been erased. I argued a little bit but they held their ground so I let it go since my temp gauge fixed itself since it had malfunctioned. While there I let them know I was having issues with my factory radio not working properly. They did the lasted update and it ended up bricking it and needed replaced which they said they would need to order. While the radio was on order, my TPMS started malfunctioning saying I had low pressure in one tire. I stopped and put air in it but the TPMS still said it was low - 15 minutes later, it corrected itself. I called the dealer that day and let them know what was going on and they told me sometimes it happens and I shouldn't be worried about it but that they would schedule me in for service because my radio showed up. Good, great - lets get this thing fixed. Took it in and had the radio replaced - this new radio worked correctly with the USB and recognized my iPod and iPhone. On the way home, I found a new issue - now my volume would stop scrolling sometimes. It would restrict the volume for about 10 minutes and then slowly creep up notch by notch. Called the dealer back and they said they would need to order yet another radio - that was a month ago. Finally today I called them to inform them of the newest issue with the fuel pump, in which they told me the other radio has arrived and that the soonest they can get me in is next Friday. He told me that they will install the new radio and check out the BCM - I guess they are starting to see there might actually be an issue here.

Sorry for getting off track but I think the back story helps here. Anyhow, does anyone have any experience with this? Or is the fuel pump a common issue with RAM?

Lastly, everything except for the most recent code has happened before 36,000 miles and has been covered under warranty. If the P0463 code was caused from the BCM, I would think this would be covered under warranty still since I took my truck in for the BCM malfunctioning before 36,000 miles. If it is a faulty fuel pump, would that be covered under the powertrain? I really don't think a fuel pump should go in a 2 year old truck with only 37,000 miles on it. If they do, then I think I shouldn't have left the blue oval family.

Any feedback is appreciated.

Here's something funny I have a 14 ram and with 37k I had the same code go off. When I fill up the truck the check engine is gone hit just below half comes back on. Get to 1/4 and it the check engine is gone. I have to make an appointment with ram. Very freaking annoying

Going home last night my CEL went off. I can live with the CEL being on until I get to the dealer next friday. I can't deal with having no fuel gauge. I am getting very irritated with all the small & annoying little things that have been happening lately.

Not a big deal. Needs a fuel level sender.

My 2014 Laramie with 39k just had the engine light come on. It is P0463 error code. Kinda weird to me how these rams around the same milage are getting the same problem.

Same issue similar miles

Same issue on my 2014 ram and happened at 39k miles, every time I refill it goes out and then code comes on and gauge drops to E around 1/4 tank. Already bought new fuel pump assembly, but disappointed in Dodge for all the minor issues I've experienced.

I guess I could add my 2014 with 78,000 to the list. This code just popped up today and won't go away.

Oh yeah..the fuel level sensor high input code.

It could be a bad connector at the harness, a shorted wire or the "Oh Hell" problem as the sensor has gone bad and it's in the tank.

Before I got too excited about going to the dealer I'd try a bottle of techron + I think it is. It's supposed to clean the electronics in the gas tank. It might be called techron super, but either way it says on the bottle that it cleans stuff in the tank.

I looked at a bottle of this stuff when I got to work this morning. It's Techron Complete fuel system cleaner. It comes in 12,16,and 32 Oz sizes. It all appears to be same stuff but qt bottle is the only one that says restore fuel gauge sensor operation, maybe just bigger bottle more space to write. Anyways 1 Oz per gallon.

I came here to add to this. I have a 2016 Ram 1500 with 19600 miles and this code just triggered the CEL. The bummer is that i just bought the truck used from Dodge on Monday. I am going to try the Techron Complete fuel system cleaner that was mentioned this weekend and see if that does anything.

I have a strange feeling that this might have been an issue prior and they just cleared the codes and let it be. My dad has a 2012 Ram 1500 and it happened to his as well. This seems to be a known issue so i dont know why its such a pain in the ass to get fixed.

I wonder if this is a problem with 2017 models as well or have they addressed this known issue as they should have long ago? I bought my 2017 1500 4x4 Limited in December and I drive quite a it, pushing 11k currently.

Earlier this week my 13 1500 V6 with 36000 miles had the CEL come on. It showed 4 codes all having to do with the fuel pump control module. Turns out there was a lot of corrosion in the module. I have a great dealer and they replaced the module for free except for my paying for overnight shiping because I wanted my truck back.

Mine did this at 58k. The part is $110 and about 2 hours of your time dropping the tank
