Just got my first RAM on the used market. 2014 Lonestar quad cab 2WD with the 5.7 Hemi and 20K miles. The original owner made a few mods-Cold air box, headers, Magnaflow exhaust, Nitto 305/50R20 tires/rims and 410 gears. I'm sure he retuned the engine. All the receipts were in the glove box. I paid $26K for it in mint condition from a dealer....seemed like a good deal.

Sounds and runs great, fun to drive and fairly quick for a pickup I suppose. My other car is a Vette so hard to compare to a big truck.

I'm getting 19MPG on the highway (at about 80MPH) and about 15MPG in town trying not to stomp on it all the time. This is my first pickup so I don't really know what to expect.

So my question is-Are those 410 gears really hurting my gas mileage? If so how much would you guess.

I am sure other factors are at play but yes at 80mph, 410s are going to hurt you.

What do you think a 5500 pound truck should get for MPG?
At that speed, 19 is great.
Slow down a little, watch the MPGs clime.

Put in 2.73s and it will climb more.

There are pro's and cons to think about before I change gears back to something lower.

First of all I'm getting an 8000 lb. trailer...so I want to asses how it pulls that.

Then I only drive the truck about 5000/miles per year so if we are talking only a 10% decrease that's maybe $100/year....I'm fine with that.

The gears are going to cost about $800 parts and labor to change so the ROI is just not there if that is the case.

FYI-The speed limits where I drive are 70MPH so if you don't drive at least 80 you are going to get run over....LOL.

What do most people get with this truck on the highway for MPG?

it's all the same tho....search works, but if you read the other posts, you'll see even tho they aren't EXACTLY what you are asking, the answer is still the same.

No truck with over 350 hp & gears matched to the tires that size is going to get much better.

stop driving 80.....the speed limit is 70....do it...you'll get another mpg.

The speed limit here is 60, and most do 70....I do 60, and get 20 mpg.

Changing gears will get you more mpg, but less power for pulling stuff.....and 800 for parts & labor is a darn good deal.

Putting in 3.55 gears, which is likely what was stock, will at BEST get you 15% better mileage...but not very likely, as it will then take more fuel to get moving due to less gear.

thank you for that great answer. So 20-21 MPG is about right for that truck if left stock.

In all reality if I tow a lot I might get better MPG with those 410 gears than 3.55's with the trailer back there....so it should work itself out to just keep the current gears.

about 15MPG in town

That's real good mine only gets 9.7 with simpler equipment.

I have 3.92 gears BTW...not much off from 4.10s

I have a 3.21 4wd with stock all terrain tires. I only get about 20 mpg at 80 mph. I get about 17 in town.

I think you answered your own question, if you will be pulling an 8000lbs trailer 4:10s are the perfect set up for you IMO

Is that mpg hand calc ? Sounds pretty good for traveling at 80 mph. I wouldn't change a thing. Welcome to the forum.

firstly, I'm so sorry you got stuck with a 8 speed and 4:10 gears. You're actually going to hate towing, contrary to what others will tell you. The 8-speed transmission is geared high final drive, than that of a typical 6 speed 4:10 rig, JEEP comes to mind here. And that's with 3.21's, their is a reason dodge offers the 3.21 in the first place, gas mileage. You should, IMO get a 3.55 or lower for towing with this truck. Anyone that's got the opportunity to tow a heavy load with the 3.21 should likely understand. I tow 7k~ pounds all the time with 3.21, and I get decent mileage and plenty of power. Those 4.10 gears will do you **** well once you get out of second gear, and since you're not mudding, and you 're not racing with a trailer behind you at a stop light, all you're doing is unnecessarily cutting your MPG just to say " I have 4.10 gears "... not to mention it's a 2WD, so the benefits of crawling offroad are out.

Your truck does sound very close to mine in equipment....except the transmission.

Have you ever pulled a heavy trailer? If so what did you think?

FYI-I'm from ID originally and grew up in Boise....it is God's country up there.

If everyone used the search function, there wouldn't be much to talk about on the forum. Give OP a break.

Keep your 410's if you are planning on towing a trailer that size.

With my 392 Factory gears i get roughly 23 doing 45-55, 21 doing 60 <--- these number include some stop and go driving. With mild acceleration. If I start playing I can make it hit 15.

These were the 2015 Loaded Sport CC numbers. I reckon I will get the same in my 2017 Larry.

Not with a 3000 stall torque converter, the only thing I haul is my dog.
Yes this is Gods country, will never live anywhere else, maybe you'll come home someday.
