Hi guys I am new to the forum. I am looking at a 2015 1500 Longhorn with the 5.7. I had a 2008 Chevy with the 5.3 and it used oil like it was made by the Saudis. I know a LOT of the Chevys have this problem doe to the cylinder deactivation. My question is about the Rams. Do they have problems like the Chevys due to deactivation cylinders? I am tired of hearing a quart of oil every 1000 miles is normal. I really like the Ram but once burned....

By the way the engine let go at 130,000 and I had to get a re-man engine then it was wrecked. Scared of GM.

My two 5.7 V8s use no oil except for what can be accounted in the PCV blow by. That gets caught by the catch can. Maybe an 8 oz cup every 15,000 miles or so.

You will find a few that use more oil for one reason or another.

My Ram's oil level hasn't had noticeable drop in 4000 miles, I have 3000 miles left on this OCI. I check and drain CC around 1000 miles give or take. Each drain shows just under a ounce. Of course this truck doesn't have 11,000 miles yet.

My truck uses no oil. I get the oil changed around 4000 miles and I always check it around 2000 and it's never dropped.

My 5.7 used to use a wee bit. No where near what you describe in your GM though. Maybe half a litre to a litre between changes (which I consider very normal) and never had issues. I am more nervous of engines that DON'T use at least a tiny amount.

Zero Oil {Burnt} used. During the 8K-8,500 mile OCI. Using a good oil with a decent NOAK & HTHS so little or No oil burning off is expected.

Catch Can-->Catches about 2 oz every OCI.

I drive almost exclusively all highway and because of that I will pull more oil through my PCV than. 90% others on this board who do more mix driving and even I will only dump maybe 4oz or half the CC every 2000miles. It's very consistent and never see a drop on my oil dipstick. Very reliable engines btw OP.

My 14 Sport loses almost a qt in 8,000 miles. Now I have a catch can install, I know where it's been going. This is the only new vehicle I've had that lost any oil in between changes.

So the cylinder de-activation does not cause them to burn oil. That is good to know. the GM's 2007-2012 5.3 use oil like crazy! Just google 5.3 oil consumption and see all the complaints. I am looking to get a 2015 Longhorn with the 5.7 with 8 speed tranny and a 3.21 rear end. Any opinions on this setup?

I would personally grab one with the 3.92s

I go 7500-8500 miles between oil changes and my truck will use about 1 - 1.5 qts in that time. Mostly due to PCV blow by in to the catch can. I say 1 to 1.5 since after draining and filter removal I can generally fill a 5qt oil jug plus some left over. There should also be some residual left in the lifters. Lord knows you aren't getting 100% of it out.

This is a known issue. Drove a company owned 5.3 Tahoe for a while and had to add a quart of oil in it between changes. My Ram doesn't burn a noticeable amount.

Below is an excerpt from FCA TSB 09-007-15 concerning oil consumption.

NUMBER: 09-007-15
GROUP: Engine
DATE: July 31, 2015
THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES SERVICE BULLETIN 09-001-12, DATED JUNE 27,
2012, WHICH SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM YOUR FILES. ALL REVISIONS ARE
HIGHLIGHTED WITH **ASTERISKS** AND INCLUDES UPDATES TO MODELS AND
OIL CONSUMPTION.
SUBJECT:
Engine Oil Consumption Guideline
**MODELS:
This bulletin applies to all 2012-2016 FCA US LLC vehicles equipped
with gasoline engines.**
DISCUSSION:
Engines require oil to lubricate and protect the load bearing and internal moving parts from wear including cylinder walls, pistons and piston rings. When a piston moves down its cylinder, a thin film of oil is left on the cylinder wall. During the power stroke, part of this oil layer is consumed in the combustion process. Varying rates of oil consumption are accepted as normal in all engines.
Oil Consumption
**The accepted rate of oil consumption for engines used in the vehicles listed above is 1 quart (0.946 liter) in 2,000 miles (3,200 km) for the 1st 50,000 miles (80,467 km). For vehicles with more then 50,000 miles (80,467 km) the acceptable oil consumption for engines is 1 quart (0.946 liter) in 750 miles (1,207 km).**
CAUTION : This above rate only applies to personal use vehicles, under warranty, that are driven in a non-aggressive manner and maintained in accordance with the appropriate maintenance schedule.

Unbelieveable. I guess all new engines use oil.

Every time I read this it blows my mind on what's "expectable". At that rate, you wouldn't need an oil change because you're constantly changing the oil anyway.

this is true. mine used a little when I bought it but now it's tuned so MDS is disabled and I run a nice 5w30 oil. HAs not used a drop since. Also, don't get 3.21's. Find a truck with 3.92's

This is what we get with increasing fuel economy standards. What the manufacturers are doing is using looser/smaller rings on the pistons. Creates less friction, which reduces the amount of power needed to turn the crank. In the end it increases oil consumption. This is fine on most vehicles, but is a problem on direct injection motors where the back side of the intake valve does not get cleaned. Prominent on Audi/VW 1.8T and 2.0T motors and BMW N20 turbo 4. Last I heard from my neighbor was that BMW is considering 1 quart consumed every 1500 miles as acceptable. Audi is replacing motors when consumption gets to 1 quart every 1000 miles.

I doubt there is not one 4 stroke gas engine made that has not used a bit of oil. Just some are worse than other.

Current engine production is down to a science but there is still variables like "tolerance stacking" that can make certain engine within the same design and series that use varying degrees of oil consumption from lot to lot.

I have a 14 sport with hemi, 8 spd and 3.21s and it does everything I need it to do and then some. If I towed heavy or were going to run larger tires and a lift I would want the 3.92 but I'm not doing either right now so I'm good. I do wish I had a limited slip rear differential but it isn't really a necessity as I have 4wd.

As far as oil usage I can't say one way or the other. I honestly don't check it and the dealer changes the oil for me every 6 months or 6k miles and has never said anything about it. I do not use an oil catch can either.
