I towed my 5er 3000 Km (about 1900 miles) over the past three weeks.
The 5er weighs 12,000 plus (I weighed it), and is 37.5 feet long, and has 3 slide outs.
I towed through rain storms, in calm weather on flat roads, some into headwinds, and eventually into the steep grades in the Canadian Rockies (the destination).
It ran in 5th gear most of the time at 2100 rpm @ 65 mph. Into head or side winds it would drop into 4th and stay there @ about 2800 RPM to maintain speed. Steeper grades ("hills") would require 3rd gear at about 3200 RPM, and once I hit the mountain grades I saw 2nd gear at 5k rpm a couple times. Temps were all in check, including transmission. Engine coolant was always around 210* - which is the same as when running empty, transmission was about 170 - 175* which is also the same as empty cruising. Engine oil did spike as the engine RPM rose, and most of the time was around 220* to 235*.
There was only a couple times I couldn't have accelerated if I wanted to, and that was when I had to drop into 2nd climbing the mountain grades. Interesting that it can do 60 mph at 5k rpm in 2nd. It tops out at just over 70 mph in 2nd at 5600 RPM...I tested that out because I was curious.
I averaged 27L/100KM which = 8.7 mpg US over the 1900 miles. On the "instant" mpg screen, I got as high at 11.7 mpg on flat terrain with no wind, and as low as 5.7 mpg bucking a stiff headwind.
Those are no BS numbers taken over a long trip in all kinds of conditions.
