I know this may have already been talked about, but i want find out what is involved in doing the 6.7L swap on a 2014 ram 1500, reason i want to do this swap is for my dad who wants to import a ram into my country of New Zealand, and with the 2500 trucks they run under a different class of registration and require stricter checks plus way more expensive to register, we have talked about doing it by buying a wrecked 2500 from an auction and swapping out the parts.

I am just wondering if the 1500 frame can withstand the cummins, the motor of the 1500 would have to come out anyway as we would have to preform a Right Hand Drive conversion to it before it would be road legal, so i just thought while the motor was out maybe we should do the swap, he does a lot of towing trailers at the moment with his chevy 2500, but its time for an upgrade.

It was either that or buy a 1500 with the eco diesel but he just doesn't know if that engine would struggle towing a 8103 lbs trailer

Anyway, any help would be great. Cheers

it would be like building the 1500 from the ground up. the frame would have to be beefed up as would the suspension and driveline including a trans from the the HD line. most likely, it would be cheaper to pay the increase in registration. imho, you would be better off with an eco diesel or look at the nissan truck with the smaller cummins, if available by you.

There's so much that comes along with the engine swap: The engine is much heavier so you need custom front springs, pretty much the whole rest of the drivetrain needs to be swapped out (transmission, transfer case, axle, driveshafts) and if it's 4x4 there is no good solution for the front. Nevermind the whole integrated electronics crap in modern vehicles (cluster and PCM comms etc.) Not worth it.
Plus, if NZ is so **** retentive you probably won't get the conversion road legal, at least not with the tow ratings you want.

How much is registration that you would even consider this?

You'd be into it for thousands and thousands. Definitely not worth it.

Food for thought. I towed 9000 lbs with my Ecodiesel last week and it didn't struggle at all!

That is exactly what I was thinking. 2500 registration must cost an arm and both legs!

I didn’t even know they made eco diesel dodges till a buddy from work rolled up in one... towed trailers like nothing... and this was in a 1500 crew cab... do they only make eco diesel in light duty?

A 1500 with 5.7 and 3.92 gears is rated for over 10,000 lbs (based on 2017 crew cab 2wd).

Here is the chart for a 2014 1500. Find the configuration and see what it will be.

You would eat up a ton of your payoad. By the time you and a passenger in it you are probably at your legal limit, maybe over

I wouldn't even consider this, even if you shoehorn the engine in, everything else is wrong. You'll need to change the suspension, front and rear axles, transmission, electronics, brace the frame, etc.
Everything about this sounds like a nightmare to undertake.

I know the threads old,but to me the easiest way would be to try and find a rolled 2500,in the same cab/box configuration as your 1500,then put the cab and box off your 1500 on it,and register it as a 1500
