Hey guys yesterday i was flipping through my owners manual and i noticed it said, "87 Octane acceptable but 89 Octane Recommended". This is something i would like to get a straight answer on. Someone explain to me how much of a difference this makes and should i start using with 89 or continue using 87. Thanks!

To get maximum power out of the truck it needs 89. This will also ensure you avoid engine knock and will help keep the engine and fuel system clean because 89 has more detergents than 87.

To prevent knock. That's basically what octane is, the fuels resistance to knock, and the higher the better.

I believe all modern gas motors have knock sensors. When they detect knock they retard the timing little-by-little until it stops. So you're not getting peak performance because the timing isn't fully advanced. But if you would only get the extra power at full throttle. So if you can accept the slight power loss regular saves you some money.

I'd say try it both ways. My "butt dyno" isn't sensitive enough to fell the difference so I run 87 all the time.

We are talking 89 octane without ethanol right? I can't find 89 without ethanol anywhere in my area and don't feel like paying $4 a gallon for 91 either so I am still running 87.

I run 87 after having run 89 and noticed no difference. I now run a 87perf tune by Diablo.

That's my problem. I am driving from NE to MN towing a boat. I wanted to know if I choose the 89 with 10% ethonal to keep 89 octane or go to 87 to avoid the ethanol? I don't know what is better avoiding the ethanol or maintaining a higher octane rating.

Going from 93 to 91 on the tune in my car netted an 8RWHP loss.

I'll run 89 in my truck since it's the cheaper of two around these parts.

Ethonal should be fine to run. Like stated before the folks in the corn states get pretty much ethonal in everything. I have that problem also being in ND. Honestly run the 89 while towing, IMO its peice of mind and you are potetially getting all the HP out of your motor you can.

I run nothing but 93. Started with 89 but figured what's the extra $3-4 per fillup
