If anyone is interested in changing their own transmission fluid on the ZF, watch the video. It is rather lengthy and goes into a lot of different things, but well worth the information.

Good video! Shawn is bashed quite a bit but he has some very good in depth videos... I have had this video bookmarked for along time.

He does have some good knowledge, but if you can't deliver it correctly and takes criticism you shouldn't be trying to help people.

I agree! He does NOT handle Criticism Very Well! I asked him a couple of questions about a video he posted and his answers he replied back with was Very arrogant and smart A$$...

It's personal preference I suppose, I could sleep better at night knowing I had the German made 8HP. No real proof there is anything wrong with the 845re but it's newer and not nearly tried and true.

Eh, I don't know crap about cars, I do know German stuff is typically over-engineered.

reference: WW2

If a Sherman broke down, any Farmboy who had ever wrenched on a tractor could fix it, If a Panther or Tiger broke down, they sent out a tank recovery vehicle, and maybe a few weeks later, 5 German engineers could fix it. :p

Although it did take a crapload of Shermans to match up to the German counterparts. :p

Judging solely by my German car owning friends, not much has changed.

I guess he is D-bag because he just disabled the comments. I just looked at the video last night and he had comments on it.

He ended up getting banned from the ecodiesel forum for being a d-bag.

If I remember correctly he had a temporary ban was back for a while, same stuff, asked the mods to delete his posts and then left on his own.

He is now back on the Ram 1500 Diesel forum and his post have been very toned down. No issues.

I don't go on there near as much anymore and haven't seen him post in forever so I assumed he was still banned.

I will use Red Line D6. Motul ATF VI now shows to be a good fit for the ZF 8 speed.

Also I think I finally found the place where Shawn bought his 8PH70 pan for $100. Instead of $300.

I am pretty sure this is the pan for the 8HP70. I need to contact them!

There is no service interval listed for these transmissions. I replied to a similar thread awhile ago about parts cost, I forget exactly how much it was. Somewhere around $700 - 800 just in parts ($300 pan/filter & about $40/qt). There is a very specific procedure to check the fluid & is more in depth than the nag Trans with the dipstick in mm increments. Seriously, I wouldn't worry about it.

As I stated many times before--->I talked personally with a ZF tech. He told me--->Not to let my 8HP70 go past 60K miles without a full service!!

If you only have future plans on keeping your Ram a few years? I would just drive the living **** out of it / wash it a few times / have the oil changed a couple times.

If your like me and have future plans on keeping your Ram for many years past your payoff you better well dam not ignore the 8HP70 service. Especially if you actually work your Ram. I myself am not that ignorant.

I first need to get my Ram into the custom muffler shop next spring and have the drivers side exhaust pipe after the kitty re-routed. (Since some Very Clueless Engineers thought it was a smart idea to run the exhaust pipe 1/2" right below the pan drain plug)!!!!!! I really would like to have the chance to sit down with these gents and have a grown up conversation. Just to get a simple logical answer------>(WHY)?!!! What the Unholy **** was you thinking?!!!!!

Some ZF techs are ultra conservative.

As an alternative, just get a lifetime warranty and forget it. When the transmission fails its on them..... :)

Lifetime max care. Worst case, I pay $100 deductible & let them worry about it. Pretty hard for them to to say lack of maintenance is my fault when they don't list a service interval.

Many times I've had people come into the dealer asking about servicing the 8 speed. The only recommended interval we can find is something like 200,000km. If you're paranoid and want to do it at 60,000 that's fine. Keep in mind it's quite the procedure just to check the level. The fluid has to be at a certain temperature as well as the vehicle needs to be off the ground in order to run the transmission up to 2nd gear.

Also I would highly advise against using anything besides the ZF 8 speed fluid. You won't get all the fluid out doing a pan drop so if you use something other than the factory fluid you're going to be mixing two different transmission fluids. I've heard stories of guys burning up their transmission not using the right fluid.

BMW 7, and AUDI A8 uses the same 8HP70, but the pans a different. The one for the RAM is a bit deeper....

Huh!

From what I have read on this Forum, there isn't even a dip stick to check the Tranny fluid, this worries me since i have also read that some of these new trucks were shipped out a few quarts low????? YIKES!!!!! Makes me want to drop the pan drain the the fluid and fill it up on the dealers lot before i drive it off. My truck isn't even built yet and I'm already worried about it. LOL

Hopefully there will be some good input for you about this topic, I am obviously no help.

If there is no dipstick, how would one know it was shipped a few quarts low?

Does the Eco Diesel have the same tranny as the Hemi?
