You did have more and depending on your tank size, had about 5-8 gallons left in the take.

Quite a few other thread that talk and argue about the DTE indication but regardless of how one thinks it should work, the only constant is that there is a buffer of fuel left when the DTE reads close to 0.

I had a chevy suburban in 95 that ran out of gas and running those dry ruined the pump and haf to replace it.

That's not almost out of gas. I was in a bad situation with a boat I just picked up in the wind. The truck was real thirsty. I got to a station and it took 26.3 gallons in a 26 gallon tank..

Yes, you probably had more left in the tank.

I've gone over 50 miles once the count down reached zero. And I not just once. So far, 3x this year.

I've got roadside assistance. I'm just trying to get some of that free gas! No luck....yet.

FYI the gas isn't free.

Not sure how reasonable this is, but I try to keep my truck over a 1/4 tank to keep the fuel pump from having to work harder.

I ran out of gas once in my old car, and that's all it took for me to pay more attention. I have a 32 gallon tank and don't let my tank go below half unless I'm on a road trip. Even then, I wouldn't let it get to a 1/4 tank. Side note, if you have roadside assistance, they will bring you up to 5 gallons of gas if you run out.

I was always taught to not let a car with an in-tank pump get below a quarter of a gallon. The fuel cools the pump in the tank, should help it last longer.

I guess i'm just old school---what's the point of running that low? Christ, it only takes about 5 minutes to pull over and fill your tank. Look at me--i got a 32 gallon tank and drove 15 thousand miles and I've still got 2 teaspoons of gas left----so what???????

LMAO, I feel the same, when I hit half talk I pull to the pump, no reason to run it dry and strain the pump.

It's funny how many people think the pump is going to burn up if it runs out of gas. I usually fill mine up at 1/4.

Well, I'm glad I found this thread! Just bought a 2010 Ram SLT 1500 w/3.92 gears. Have filled it twice now when the gauge was on empty yet only took 20 gallons each time even though I have a 26-gallon tank! I guess I had SIX gallons left?!? Is this normal?

no what they are saying is repetitively running the tank low on gas causes premature wear on the pump, which it does.

Personally none of my vehicles go below half a tank...

I wouldn't run it below a quarter tank regularly... those in-tank pumps are cooled by fuel.
