I was looking under the hood the other day and noticed that my truck has a clutched engine driven fan and an electric fan on it. Is this typical? I had just bought it used a couple months ago. Would I be able to remove the clutched fan and just run the electric and be ok?

Subbed. I've never paid attention because I haven't had any reason to go under the hood other than oil changes. Why would there be engine driven and electric? That seems like a waste.

Yes, you can remove the clutch fan, but only if you have a tuner to control the electric AC fan. The AC fan is designed to come on whenever your AC is running, and with tuning we can also control what temperature it turns on and off when your AC is not running. This is a cheap and easy upgrade.

Cool beans. Looks like I know what's coming off my truck this weekend. Time to email Sean again. :happy107:

Edit: So can I remove the shroud if I remove the engine driven fan, or does it still serve some other purpose?

To add to what Matt said there are many thread that discuss it on the forum, look up the V6 Efan conversion, there might be a sticky in the tech section I cant remember though. It will be my next modification

Little thread drift, which coolant is used in a 2013 5.7? Is it HOAT or OAT

Sent from somewhere with confusion.

Plenty of us have removed the clutch fan with no issues. We used to replace both fans with the V6 electric fan assembly but others have found that the A/C electric fan is sufficient to keep to up the cooling requirements, even when towing.

Look in you reservoir, if it's red then it's HOAT, if it's purple then it's OAT.

Also the V6 fan is only a direct fit for the 09-13 trucks. The 2014+ trucks have to extend the wiring harness and the V6 fan plug does not reach. Many people were skeptical about whether the stock fan would hold up over time (myself included), but I have yet to see any problems with this setup, even in the heat. What is nice about the V6 fan is that it comes with its own shroud which opens up the engine bay a bit. If you are just going to run your stock AC fan, then you really need to keep the larger fan shroud on the truck.

When you talk about the V6 fan, are you referring to the V6 Ram? I'm going to assume it is a dual fan, probably same radiator.... or am I way off?

check your manual.
if it says to use the 150,000 miles antifreeze it is the purple one.
Do not mix them or else you can damage the cooling system.

The 2 antifreezes looks the same inside a tank, so you need to take some out put it in a clear bottle and see what color is it.

I believe a 2013 uses the purple antrifreeze

Yes. Its the fan that comes stock on the 09-12 V6 model Ram trucks.

This is good to know... I still think I'm going to swap over to the V6 set up, I'm also thinking custom alum but that is only for looks and such with what I have in mind with the engine dress up.

Does removing the mechanical fan significantly reduce the fan noise heard from the engine? If so I'd probably do this mod for that benefit alone, and let the slight power gain be a bonus.

Gotcha. For some reason I had dual fan in my head.

Edit: So if I remove the engine driven fan and install the single fan I can ditch the giant shroud, correct? Also, what's holding the pulley on that the engine driven fan is connected to? Lastly, is that engine driven fan standard or reverse thread?

Thanks for all the replies guys. I'm not sure if I'm going to mess with it right now. Maybe if I ever get a tuner, I will.

Yes it does. It's much quieter without the clutch fan.
