I've been told that putting a louder muffler on the ecodiesel doesn't do anything. So has anyone tried just running a straight pipe with no muffler?

It won't do much for sounder or performance due to the emissions system

Adding a straight pipe DPF back won't do anything. It's the DPF that holds everything up.
If you want it to be louder, get an off road tune from GDE and run a straight pipe from the turbo back.

I have heard if you install a catch can in addition to a straight pipe you can gain at least 50 HP.

I thought so too. I gained no HP or torque. The flowmaster 50 sounded good and I lost mpg. Because I liked the sound.
